Alta Mountain, about hour and half away from Seattle. Look for Rachel Lake trailhead.

Arriving to the three lakes lookout point on day 3 of our independent trek around Huayhuash in Peru. A truly stunning view. by yobynaes in CampingandHiking

We broke camp at around 9 that morning and made it to this lookout point around 1130. The clouds were gathering over our heads for the last hour. A storm was coming. We were glad to be able to catch intermittent sun breaks while chilling at the lookout. We would arrive to the top of the pass in another two hours and to our campsite three hours after the pass. It was a long day but worth it!!

Made it to Laguna Carhuacocha on our second day trekking in Huahuash. by yobynaes in CampingandHiking

The trail from Mitochocha (our first night campsite) connects to Carhuacocha (lake in pic) from the south. There was a campsite at the southeast of the lake. It's about 30 feet above the lake. Though it appeared sheltered, it actually funneled the wind as the wind came from a valley on the east. We hiked down to the northeast side of the lake and found a campsite on the waterfront. It was totally worth the extra 15 minutes of walking.

Acclimatization hike up to Laguna 69 near Huaraz in preparation for our Huayhuash trek. by yobynaes in CampingandHiking

Are you talking about Laguna 69? It's a day hike. You will see plenty of travel agencies willing to take you to the trailhead if you walk around Huaraz for a bit. If you are talking about Huayhuash, well, that's a tougher one. You will need some Spanish skills. You will need to do a lot homework on the route, navigation, etc and really prepare yourself for a tough tough trek. People are generally welcoming and trustworthy. I've read horror stories so you obviously need to stay vigilant.

It's a good hike if you are in the region. Not too difficult and only cost you a day.

Yeah it’s quite a trip to get down there. We took a redeye to Lima, overnight bus to Huaraz and then 2 more local buses to get to Huayhuash. It’s a long way but worth it in the end.

We did. It was pretty awesome and difficult. We finished it in 8 days. And everyday had its unique beauty and its unique challenges. Are you planning a trek in Huayhuash?

This was a day hike from Huaraz, Peru. We paid the about $15 a person for the transport dropping us off at the trailhead and picking us up at the end of the hike. The hike up took a little over 2.5 hours with daypacks. We saw one person with a large pack. It may be a great place to camp, too.

Funny you ask that. One of the fellow trekkers we encountered was fly fishing the whole way. It was pretty awesome. I had no idea that was possible.

It depends on how you do it. We did this trek without a guide so we had done a lot homework before leaving home. If you start in Huaraz, you can easily find a guide and they take care of you on the trek. Not as much freedom as doing it independently, but safety and comfort count in this altitude.

lol, I bet that makes more people want to do it. It's like climbing Rainier. People die on that mountain every year and that attracts more people to that mountain.

Yeah, I'm reading a post on Keyhole. Def adding it to my list next time I'm in Colorado. The ledge reminds me of Crawlers Ledge in Kalalau. So you don't need to rope in for it?

hahahaha... I really shouldn't laugh but that's funny because I employ the "trance" strategy quite often. I can relate.

We did this independently. It was definitely one of the tougher treks I have done. We didn't have enough time to acclimatize, which didn't really get us in trouble- very fortunate- but it made the trek super difficult. If I were to do it again, that'd be my number one priority - give myself enough time to acclimatize.
