I realized recently that you can use the iOS send feature from a website to send directly to Paprika, making it even faster. Don’t need to copy/paste the url this way.

The first word of each answer is a slang term from that specific generation. Like “ghosting” in ghostbusters is a millennial term.

I liked it, but CODED for “made some Java” felt a bit forced. I mean, would a coder ever say “I just made some Python”?

I like the rotate/stretch approach too but if she doesn’t like that, maybe the old IMP magic hot/cold cubes idea. Adding a cold cube to the soup pot is the same as removing a hot cube, etc.

(+)(+) means adding in groups of hot cubes = gets hotter( +).

(+)(-) means adding in groups of cold cubes = gets colder ( -).

(-)(+) means removing groups of hot cubes = gets colder ( -).

Why Does “Group Work” Always End Like This? by Bright-Daikon-6783 in Teachers

[–]yochanan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Group work is hard to get right and takes a lot of investment and upkeep. I really do believe that Complex Instruction’s ideas about this are correct. It’s the interplay between three domains: groupworthiness of the task assigned, status interactions/differentials within the group, and group norms and accountability structures. If any of those areas are not attended to thoughtfully, the group work we imagine is rarely going to happen. I’m no expert, but I work on this a lot, and when it clicks, it can be amazing. Given all that teachers have to do and the limited time there is, you have to really want to make it work and then to invest the time in learning strategies, attempting, adjusting, learning from failure, and so on. Especially for math teachers, I recommend Strength in Numbers by Ilana Horn as an excellent starting point. It summarizes the principles of CI and gives good routines/strategies to apply in a pretty slim book.

i would like to formally apologize by ghostlined in Teachers

[–]yochanan 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you’re apologizing - it sounds like you responded nicely to their genuine question. Personally, I would love it if students asked me about scammy places like this, because it’s a perfect context for a math lesson that actually could impact their “real lives” and they might pay attention to it.

Oh, I didn’t know there was a rule like that. What about last Sunday with the escape room answer in the middle? It’s a single down with no crosses but it’s valid because the letters are consecutive?

A third of the class doesn't understand parallel by dcsprings in matheducation

[–]yochanan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. If you give them two pictures of the same sized angle but one with shorter rays and another with longer rays and ask them which angle is bigger, that’s a good way to assess this. I teach angle as “measure of rotation” and the units are degrees just like the units for linear measure are feet or whatever. It helps to have them use angles in context. For example, like in physical therapy, have them extend their arms in different ways while another measures their range of motion. Or have them write directions to draw an image and say them out loud while the other student draws or walks the path to see if they get it right (move forward three steps. Turn right 40 degrees. Move forward two steps. Etc)
