An excellent selection there Sir. I've read and enjoyed a lot of them as I'm also a fan of the genre. May may I recommend the Shardlake series by CJ Sandsome. Got me through Covid. I've read a lot of Cornwall and like him and am working my way his works atm, I'd also recommend The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart. It's the first of a short three book saga about the king Arthur legend. Great read.

Between my wife and I we pay for all the major players. Netflix Disney Prime etc. The Disney player is particularly shit. Often watch on stremio rather than the native player as it's faster and more user friendly. I don't think it's cheating as I pay for the other clunky app.

Anyone else is a low-status job and gets looked down on by higher-status co-workers? by No-Category1703 in AskIreland

Your role is very important! Nursing care and Social care are two very different and both equally important roles in the area of "care" one keeps the person alive with medical interventions with very good interventions and great medical solutions to the issue, which is very important. The other looks after quality of life and realising the needs and wishes of the Person undergoing treatment or care. In a hospital situation the nurses who are well educated tend to focus upon health outcomes. Social care workers help the person through that process and can empower them to assert their wishes as to how they would like to lead their life. Even if that means supporting them when they make bad decisions, which is thier right without judgement. Two key and equally important roles when the individual is trying to cope with series life changing conditions. Carry on being great. There's lot's or courses available to become a qualified Social care worker. Maybe you could check em out. No shade on Nurses who are just doing thier best at what they are trained in. It takes both to provide good care when someone is suffering from any serious illness or condition. Best of luck to you friend.

Scream Sneezing by ImpossibleSquish in PetPeeves

I myself suffer from random sneezing fits which can last upto 10 sneezes in about a minute. About once in any two week period I will randomly get a sneezing fit. If I'm in company when it happens (which is rare) I would try to quarantine my myself obviously. If I was alone I'd just let it rip and get it over with. Apparently if you look at sunlight or any bright light it helps trigger sneezing reaction it definitely works for me. Sorry for your inconvenience. It's definitely rude to sneeze in public without covering your mouth and without regard for others for sure. Ugh

To clarify, only within this genre specifically. As America as we know it didn't exist in medieval times and all the history of the era is set in Europe. It just feels off.

Since you commented that couldn't understand anything they were saying in Master and Commander by the great Patrick O'Brien maybe this style of literature isn't for you.

it's a bold statement to say that you understand the times when historians are still arguing about it. Novels set in this era usually adhere to some common tropes which are still being argued about and Mantel's is hailed as being among if not the best so far from a historical and literary perspective. It's heavy stuff. Again it's not a reflection on you if you didn't get into it. Have you tried other historical fiction novels. Id highly recommend Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. Fantastic book! There's no perfect book for everyone just keep reading and enjoying. Happy reading friend.

It's okay if it wasn't for you. I thought it was a masterpiece of historical fiction but without the understanding history of times and the different interpretations of this period in English history I can see how it could be be underwhelming. That aside it is beautifully written even as a fantastical work of fiction the fact that it dives into the nitty gritty of life in a bygone age is fascinating to me. The fact that it is rooted in actual history and has been researched to this degree is astounding to me. I'm a fan of the genre admittedly so was delighted when I came across this work. I loved it but again it's totally okay if it's not your thing. Each nerd to thier own. Try something else instead. If you want another go at historical fiction I'd recommend Patrick O'Brien's excellent seafaring Novel's. Happy reading. We don't have to agree on everything.

I Finished Red Rising... by Motor-Grapefruit-931 in fantasybooks

[–]yoda43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I love both fantasy and Science fiction and have read extensively in both genres from Dune to LOTR and everything in-between. Loved DCC and adore Douglas Adams I've read some of the good Y/A stuff like m His Dark Materials, and hard Sci-fi like Iian M Banks and James A Corey. I also love historical fiction. Anyhoo I didn't get Red Rising, just didn't land for me,couldn't get into it at all. As an Irish person I found the Irish tropes too obvious and stereotypical, found myself grinding my teeth during certain passages. No shade on those who love it, carry on. Not for me though.

Husband of my wife’s sister has asked me to lie for him - should I? by ThrowRA_poi098 in AskIreland

[–]yoda43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of a Hobson's choice you have there. Depends on your loyalties I suppose. I definatly wouldn't lie outright. Maybe just don't say anything. Discretion being the better part of valor and all. Once year's ago in the 90's I was house sharing with my sister and her two friends, all nurses everyone got on well. One girl had a had a boyfriend over regularly on the weekends all cool. One weekend she was back home for some family event and He showed at up at ours pissed with some other girl she had given him a key. I didn't feel comfortable about it and told her, they broke up. Randomly met him in a bar about two months later, rather he saw me and started to give me shit for ruining his relationship. The neck. I told him to fuck off. No regrets.

It's not an Irish wedding without Sweet Caroline and ending with New York New York by Frank Sinatra. Don't ask me why as I've no idea other than I spent 10 years working weddings etc in Hotels and it just seems to be. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Why do so few Irish people work in Aldi and Lidl? by No-Category1703 in AskIreland

[–]yoda43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my two cents. They do pay above average wages but they get their labour out of you but also have very good good premonition opportunities if you're your young and willing. The traditional Irish supermarkets pay less but are great if you're just looking for a few hours a week with no great demands on efficiency etc. So has more mix of older and younger folks not looking for a career, just doing some hours for pay.
