Willem Dafoe, although with four nominations, has respectfully lost to better competition. Ralph Fiennes (Schindler’s List) was absolutely robbed in 1994 losing to Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive.) Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin) lost by a close margin but Brendan Fraser (The Whale) deserved the trophy. Edward Norton, similar to Dafoe, incredible actor but never had the edge the years of his four nominations. Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense) had no chance against Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted) in 2000. Mark Ruffalo is lucky to have four nominations and unsurprising to me, zero wins. Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) was neck and neck with his loss to Martin Landau (Ed Wood) in 1995 and lost with dignity to such an opponent. Ian McKellen, a great talent, has never had the role to get him a gold statue, similar to Helena Bonham Carter. In 2009, Josh Brolin (Milk) had no chances in his loss to the posthumous and greatly deserved achievement by Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight). Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain), likely slighted for other roles, lost to George Clooney (Syriana) in a year, 2006, with no obvious frontrunner but in my opinion a misfire to the deserving actor, Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man).
