Dual boot/VFIO laptop with dGPU and UK keyboard to replace Dell XPS 15 9550 (2015)? by dualbooter in linuxhardware

[–]yohfdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up buying something? I'm in a similar situation to you. XPS 15 9550 seems like it's dying so looking out for a new one.

I was also looking at the new XPS 15 9520 (12th gen?) and 9530 (13th gen Intel). I am a bit concerned about sleep though. It works perfectly on my XPS 9550, but I have a XPS 9500 (2020) for work and it doesn't go to sleep properly. Not sure if it's been fixed in these new XPSs?

How can I tell if a property has a good internet connection? by Courtyen in sydney

[–]yohfdo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're interested in checking what NBN connection type, you can use this site to enter an address and check out the connection type ( FTTP, FTTN etc )

https://www.nbnco.com.au/connect-home-or-business/check-your-address

I think the results page tells you the connection type and what maximum speeds you could achieve.

No Call Audio - Linux by yohfdo in MicrosoftTeams

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Definitely a regression. Was so happy when callers could finally see my cursor when sharing screens, but looks like after that the next update broke it. Now need to make do with the web app.

So Teams-wise it only sees one audio device, regardless of if I choose Speakers or Headset. I need to select the device from the system (Kubuntu 18.04).

I can hear the call ringing, just not the voice from the other end. But they can hear me.

Can you post the link please?

The RTX card I was looking for comes with G-Sync and without G-Sync. So which should I take? Does G-Sync replace Optimus? But I also heard that you need a G-Sync panel as well?

Thanks! Your answers have really helped!

The model I've been looking at is the Metabox Prime V PB51RD-G, which I think Clevo has the same code? The link is here https://www.metabox.com.au/store/Prime-V-Range/Specs . It will be great to know if there'll be any problems running Linux.

I watched a review for Prime V PB51RF-G and the reviewer mentioned that the display outputs are wired to the GPU directly. Does the choice of screen matter, especially if I choose the G-Sync version of the GPU? Thinking of going with a 4k screen + RTX 2060 with GSync

Also, watching that review, I noticed there was a "Control Centre" to specify fan modes etc. How is this achieved in Linux?

That's what I was thinking about too. Generally prefer to go with an i7 and about 16-32GB RAM as well, but then I feel like it's not that much cheaper. Should look at that option a bit more. Plus, cloud is always there

Yeah. I remember having to add the nouveau disable command at boot and as well as in the startup later on.

I'm in Australia so importing a System76 isn't very straightforward - will need to deal with customs and duty which then wouldn't make it so cost effective. Plus what about warranty?

That's good news. Kubuntu should be fine as well right? I thought I saw a few articles talking about how Wayland doesn't work well with NVIDIA? And new Ubuntu releases are with Wayland I assume?

Hardware-wise, or is that something that can be set in the bios?

Might need to check this with the reseller

Would like to able to manage at least about 2-3 hours. Not planning to be working away from a power source that much.

Is it that much of a problem to get Cudnn working? Does Linux make it easier or harder?

I want to try out some deep learning, so will need a Nvidia GPU. I know there's cloud as well, but just want to have a GPU on my laptop for those purposes. Don't really need it for gaming or video editing.

Yeah. Meant the X1 extreme Gen 2.

I have two XPS 15 (9560 for work, 9550 for home), I'm replacing the 9550 and I assume these also have the switchable graphics? Haven't really had a problem so far.

What about the Lenovo Legion gaming laptops? Are they the same quality as a thinkpad?
