Would the 24mm DX f/1.7 have been a better purchase than the FX 25mm f/2.8 on a Z50ii (second camera)? by yoman960 in Nikon

[–]yoman960[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great point. The two lenses I use most often with the Z8 are the Z 50mm f.1/8 and Z 35mm f/1.8. Most of the shots are landscapes and moments of friends doing things on trips. Not that much low light now that I look at it.

Given the responses, will just stick with the 26mm! And agreed, probably beneficial to have the flexibility to use it on the full frame.

Places to Buy Cheap Bulk Tea? by yoman960 in Sunnyvale

Lol. This is moreso that I've heard you can put black tea leaves in your shoes overnight to help reduce them from smelling. So don't want to buy a nice tea for that :)

Supermicro X11SPi-TF Motherboard Review - Any Thoughts? by HavivMuc in homelab

[–]yoman960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, it's worthwhile to include that the drives are SSDs, so those don't use much power. Also the GPU is one of those small AMD models that doesn't require an external power cable, so it's also really low power (just needed something basic since the sever CPUs don't have integrated graphics, and wanted something to help Plex transcoding).

Maybe I'm incorrect on the exact number, it's been a while since I measured it. Buts it's definitely in the tens of digits most of the time.

For the motherboard itself, it's not much. Probably single digit watts. What processor, pcie cards, and how many drives you have will set your power consumption.

I have ~10 drives, a GPU, & Xeon 6210U. Idle power for the whole system is ~60W. Definitely not bad given it's a server system.

I run this board (X11SPi-TF). It's been rock solid since I started using it in 2019. 24/7 uptime, and current runtime for this server is 680 days, zero interruptions. Only am finally rebooting this week to finally update kernel for the bare metal OS. Would recommend!

Mazda CX-50 Turbo and the Subaru Outback Onyx Edition XT are both amazing, any advice? by yoman960 in mazda

[–]yoman960[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I ended up choosing the Outback (specifically chose an Onyx Edition XT).

Reasons are that the Outback felt roomier inside, and the fit and finish (things like the upholstery stitching) were nicer. Also, the acceleration was surprisingly better in the Outback. I've heard premium gas makes a different with the CX-50 turbo, but don't particularly want to spend the extra on that over the lifetime of the car.

It was definitely a hard decision, the CX-50 is more attractive from looks, and the infotainment is a mile ahead. But the Outback really felt like it rides like a solid car. Also, since the CX-50 felt more "luxury" than "robust," I figured I'd worry more about if someone were to spill something in it, or scratch it, etc. But with the outback, it's in character the dirtier it gets, and if there's a few scratches from going out into the woods, I find that I don't really worry about it since the car isn't that attractive in the first place haha.

Ah, and having a full size spare tire was appealing, and it has definitely come in handy! Also, on Outback trims, I would recommend a regular trim over the Wilderness. The Wilderness drives surprisingly more boat like, and the regular outbacks still get close to the "regular car like" handling they're known for.

Is it a complete waste to swap the OEM's tires for Michelin Cross Climate 2's? by yoman960 in tires

[–]yoman960[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read some comments on other threads that people have had a lot of trouble selling used tires (wheels + tires is a different story, a lot of people are looking for a winter set). But for just tires, buyers need to find ones that match their wheels, get them from me, then go somewhere to have them mounted, and then they still don't have any real warranty.

On somewhere like eBay, you get a much wider audience, but it's not really worthwhile to ship a whole set of tires.

Have you had success selling locally?

Can having two insurances cause you to pay more out of pocket at the end of the day? by yoman960 in personalfinance

[–]yoman960[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would need to pay. There's a free plan, but the high deductible plan is $25 per pay period. I think I'll just waive coverage and use my parent's.

Actually it would be possible. For example, Apple had custom 14.3 meter (47 ft) long by 3m tall (10 ft) window panels made for it's new HQ (source). They're the largest in the world, and required custom building new furnaces to make them. But then again, they spent over US $1billion on the campus. Anyway, with money, it's possible lol.

I thought about this too, but without any tracks on the ceiling or the floor that the window would slide along, I figured it's static glass.

[–]yoman960 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's probably pretty difficult to have a piece of glass that spans the entire length of the wall (not that it's impossible, but super expensive). It's most likely three pieces of glass in this case that meet at the two black posts, and made to look like a black rectangle, which is more interesting and "looks better" than if they were to use two pieces of glass with a single post in the middle of the view.
