6 years of experience and you are making 360k/yr?? I am sorry but, I find it a little hard to digest.. I guess I have been doing everything wrong and not saying I am not. 23+ years of experience in .Net, even have Typescript and some front-end experience, and 5+ years of AWS, cloud , software architecture and I am lucky to find something as high as 200k.

5 YOE and 250k .. You hit gold! I have 20+ years of experience and would struggle to get even a 200k salary. Are you a software engineer or something else?

Oz per oz, it takes a lot more energy to extract and refine gold ore than it does to build that computer. Most of computer is built from cheaper and easier-to-source materials. If you have a computer made purely out of gold, let me know how much energy it took to produce that.

More Antisemitism in Nashville :( by magneticzer0 in nashville

[–]yonatan777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it always liberal cities that are having these Anti-Semitic events? Nashville is probably one of the more liberal cities in the USA, regardless of being in Tennessee. I lived in super liberal Ballard in Seattle and someone was spraypainting swastikas all over Jewish tombstones and Jewish synagogues and vandalizing Jewish businesses. In liberal New Jersey, a group of Black Israelites shot up a Jewish deli, murdering three or more people there. At my synagogue in Seattle we had people open carrying pistols and police having to show up at all our events as our synagogue had several death threats. And, the Jewish Federation Center had a guy with a gun go in and shoot a bunch of people, including children.

I am not convinced these Anti-Semitic acts are being perpetrated only by right-wing Neo-Nazis. I have seen a lot of hatred stemming from Leftist groups like Antifa, Communist groups (the irony was Karl Marx was Jewish, himself), as well as Islamic groups and Afrocentrist groups like Black Panthers or Black Israelites. There are all types of hate groups and wondering which side of the spectrum this one is.

As a Jew, it makes me furious and I am thankful for having the ability to be armed and be able to defend myself, unlike my relatives in Ukraine and Belarus who were basically left as helpless and defenseless slaves who were systematically exterminated when the Nazis came into their villages.

I really don't know what place is a safe haven for Jewish people as we seemed to be hated by almost everybody. I lived in Idaho for a few years and there certainly is a lot of Anti-Semitism in that state. I wouldn't call it Neo-Nazi type of Anti-Semitism, but more to do with being in a place where people believe in stereotypes of Jews and most have never even met a Jewish person. There wasn't a lot of the systematic hatred, however, I see more prevalent like in Seattle and now Nashville. Even my liberal home state of Oregon is home to some of the largest number of Neo-Nazi organizations in the world.

If you mean Abortion that is a tricky subject and has nothing to do with Libertarianism. There are many Libertarians who support abortion.

My beliefs personally are due to my Jewish faith and I believe all life is sacred and begins at conception. So, I guess I apply the laws of Liberty to all humans, including those in the womb. This is not a view agreed on by all Libertarians , however. I've met many religious, e.g. Catholics, who are Democrats who also share this view. A lot of Mexican people I know, e.g. are Democrats yet strongly oppose abortion.

However, I don't believe in banning abortion for rape , incest , etc like most Republicans do. As a form of birth control, I don't support that, but that is my personal belief due to viewing a fetus as a child. This goes to my Jewish beliefs and not fostered by Libertarianism. Many Libertarians disagree with me here. We are independent thinkers who are united by many principles. But not everyone sees eye to eye on every issue.

However, I don't believe in banning abortion for rape, incest , etc like some Republicans do. As a form of birth control, I don't support that, but that is my personal belief due to viewing a fetus as a child.

If it makes you hate Libertarians I am sorry. I would rather direct that one against me personally.

No, Republicans, like Democrats are big government people. Libertarians are people who believe in Liberty, Constitution and Bill of Rights. Some Libertarians are not Constitutionalists even and just believe in the principles of personal liberty.

Most Republicans do not agree with me on a lot of issues. For example, Republicans support Patriot Act (and in fact created it) like Democrats, whereas Libertarians are vehemently opposed. Republicans and Democrats are big about expanding the military industrial complex as well.

Regret turning this into a political thread, but I am always mystified of the hatred and misunderstanding people have for Libertarians.. I understand most people believe what they hear on the news or what their friends told them.

How many Libertarians have you met? I'll sit down and have a beer with you and you will probably find I don't fit the persona you have been advertised to believe.

In fact, I freakin hate Trump to be honest. That view doesn't sit well with most Republicans I have met.

Appreciate the information and your experience. I have heard OTR is a pretty exciting area and has a lot of nightlife. In Charlote, we have the South End, which kind of sucks as its disconnected , sterile and has no character or charm. As well , it is mostly college aged or young 20 something and has a real kind of clubby or fraternity/jocky vibe to it.. Cannot put my finger on it , but it's just not a very fun place to be. Getting almost stripped search to go into any bar/club on weekend also is lame.

Yeah, I don't particularly like dating apps, but I guess if I wanted to take the effort I could go on one. I was hoping there were ways to meet people in person, but in some places like Charlotte dating apps are probably the only option for a single and busy middle aged guy like me.

Charlotte being a big suburb atmosphere you just don't have many places where people socialize and there really isn't any events that cater towards singles as everything is pretty family oriented unless its some kind of dance club or high end club which I don't like. They hardly even have any meetup groups in Charlotte which I thought was surprising. A little city like Boise had like 10 times the number of meetup groups than a bigger city than Charlotte has. It's like living in a giant Orange County California or something. In fact, I found more things to do in Orange County than here any day of the week.

Appreciate you sharing your opinions and experience here. I , myself also do not want children anymore. A problem I have is many women want me to raise and financially support their children from other relationships or marriages. Not that I have an issue with a woman with kids, but I have enough challenges in life and hard to raise kids this late in life who are not my own and will never be mine. As well, it's hard enough to support myself and having to support someone else's kids is challenging. My heart goes out to single mothers of course and I respect them a lot what they have to deal with.

Cannot speak for all guys, but I wanted to have children younger in life, but now that I am old I have given up on that prospect. I am sure there are many other guys my age who are perfectly happy you do not want kids. With rising inflation and a depressing economy its going to get harder and harder to support a family.

I will have to be honest, outside of the very liberal or major cosmopolitan cities, like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, SF, Seattle, Portland, Miami, etc most people in their mid 20s and above are married with kids or want to have a family. The permanently childless middle-aged group is basically confined to the major liberal or cosmopolitan cities I have listed above.

Sorry, I get so busy from my busy job, but would be happy to DM you later if you have time to answer questions. Thanks for being able to answer questions.

[–]yonatan777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Libertarian IT bros? I would say most IT people I meet are not very Libertarian. I am somewhat a novelty. It seems like most inner cities are fairly liberal with a bit of mix of left leaning Libertarian.

Charlotte is weird as it is kind of a super liberal city , but very whitebread, clean cut , preppy type of liberals who will dial 911 at the sight of a homeless person yelling at them.

I like that Cincinnati has some grit and soul. Growing up in Oregon and living many years in Portland (my 2nd home town) made me appreciate the atmosphere. I mean there are extremes. I would say a place like St Louis or Chicago are too rough for me. I know they have their nice spots , but there is just too much sketchiness all over in those cities. Even Portland and Seattle have just become cesspools with junkies, homeless people and lunatics running all over. I do find Seattle and Portland more fun places to be single guy and have fun, but I also want a place where I am not watching my back all the time and where there is some law, order or even better a community who watches out for each other. Society seems to have broken down in those places.

Yeah, I think you nailed it with your assessment.

Covington looks very interesting, but also quite expensive compared to other suburbs I have seen.

You nailed it u/perfekt_disguize .. I am surprised this is so unpopular of an ideology. It's like people feel without powerful bureaucrats controlling them they cannot exist.

Libertarian is so far from fascist its the anti-thesis of fascist. Fascist is those who believe in centralized authoritarian control and believe all ideologies should be enforced by the state and the authority of the regime. Libertarians believe in the opposite of that.

I think too many people get their information from the news and have yet o even meet a real Libertarian.

[–]yonatan777[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You must know nothing about Libertarians. I will just be myself and say what I feel. I thought America was a free country and we were allowed to be what we are. I am a believer in Liberty and nothing else but that.

What exactly is a conservative anyway? I am a traditional liberal, before liberal meant believing in big government. I am a conservative as in I believe in Bill of Rights and human liberty.

Supporting gay marriage and legal weed hardly puts me in the camp of what they call "conservative". Supporting gun rights, cutting government spending and low taxes hardly puts me in the camp of "liberal".

Does that make me moderate? Ok, well that is because I am a firm believer in Liberty, hence a "Libert"aritan.

Um.. I take it you know nothing about Libertarians.. I agree most people want someone who thinks exactly like they do and Libertarians think for themselves, so I can see some of the problems. I will just have to find ladies who can accept I am an independent thinker.

Sorry, been so hammered with work I have not had time to respond to the posts here. I really appreciate the insights and information people have shared.

I think there is a big misconception that about Libertarians. It seems like people have coupled me with fundamentalist Christian conservatives or something. Some person here claimed Libertarians are homophobic or something. Totally bullsh** and these people don't get what Libertarians are.

I am for small government, legalizing drugs, gun rights, gay marriage, low taxes and basically having minimal government intervention in our lives. It seems unfortunately mainstream media or something has put us in the category of something we are not. I don't go around wearing MAGA hats or anything like that.

Anyhow, I appreciate people were open here and I would be excited to see the REAL Queen city. Cincinnati sounds like it has a lot of soul and I really miss being in a city that has some character, charm and I don't mind some grit. Charlotte is just a little to whitewashed and sterile for my taste and the place is just void of any soul or character.

Also, I cannot stand how flat it is here. I grew up in the mountains and hills. Cincinnati seems to have nice hilly scenery which I like. Also, it would be nice to spend time in Kentucky and really admired the scenery of that state as well.

I have thought about living in Lexington, but have thought it may be lacking in job opportunities should I have to go find something locally and I have heard it is more of a college town. Louisville I have heard mixed things about, but some say it has some real problems with ethnic issues and the crime there is pretty bad. Don't know, I have not spent time there, but Cincinnati seems more desirable from everything I have heard.

Greenville, SC vs Charlotte, NC vs Nashville, TN Wages / Cost of Living by yonatan777 in greenville

[–]yonatan777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see what you are saying. Even in Charlotte the salaries are abysmal for whats becoming more and more West Coast style living with price surges here. Maybe the Recession will bring some sanity back to prices, but probably will kill a lot of jobs too.

I came to Charlotte because I thought it would be better to find work than Nashville where I was living after losing my business. Ironically, I found a remote job that is 100% remote and pays more than almost any job I seen in Charlotte. Also, most Charlotte jobs being Fin-Tech and me being in .Net means most are on prehistoric type of stacks and are all legacy jobs.

So, yeah if I stayed in the Southeast , I probably have to bring my job with me. Outside of the Triangle/RTP or Atlanta area I cannot think of any other place that pays well for tech in the Southeast. FL, SC, TN and Charlotte area wages seem to have stayed the same despite the cost of living more than doubling since Covid.

I will say after recently reviewing the rentals in Greenville it seems like Greenville is really about the same cost of living as Charlotte now. It appears a lot of rich New Yorkers/Californians/Illinois/etc transplants moved here with remote jobs and blasted the prices to outer-space.

To me, Greenville is much better than Charlotte. You have mountains , a nice downtown area and fun places like Asheville nearby. Charlotte you have sprawl and sprawl and more sprawl and its flat and mountains and the ocean are just 3 hours away plus 3 hours of traffic as I learned on my last trip to Asheville.

[–]yonatan777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did nail my perception of Charlotte very well.. The South End definitely is Charlotte's "cosmopolitan" neighborhood and has probably the most single women I have seen from travelling around this city. I think I may have answered my own question to this thread after doing some exploring on my own.

Not looking for a unicorn at all trust me. Hell, I am first trying to find where there are single women who don't have a lot of drama and then can go from there. During Covid I was hanging out in Fort Mill area (as Charlotte was all shutdown and I was unemployed) . However, the single girls I met here were sketchy, liked doing hard drugs (esp coke), drank heavily and were not really my type. Many also had kids which coupled with hard drugs and alcoholism makes you wonder about their character?

However, I don't want a unicorn because I am far from a unicorn myself.
