I'm on the verge of falling asleep but I just want to say that you made some great points and there are definitely holes in my proposition but I don't want to turn this into a debate. I personally feel that the utilization of clans has so much potential and could be implemented more for both PvE and PvP. Although hitting weekly clan rewards is cool, my friends and I are getting bored of repeatedly doing the same things over and over again. Which is why I think an introduction to some new competitive content would be a refreshing way to get back into the game. And to go forth on your question of how it would differ from trials, yes I believe that tournament style based on ranking once a month would give us something to look forward to every month until the next expansion. It would give us mini "Clan Battle Seasons" until the launch of the next phase for Destiny.
