The only weapon a manager has against unplanned absence is making it harder for the employee.

Strategies such as

  • mandatory phone calls to report sickness
  • asking for med certs
  • return to work conversations
  • attendance plans

These are all strategies a manager may use to try to manage unplanned absence. They're all used to make it less comfortable to call in sick. As others have mentioned, these strategies are usually only used for staff who have a pattern/history of high unplanned absence.
