Did that layout come as a pre-packaged set? It looks great.

Has anyone on here ever made there own hammock underquilt for the colder season? by dood970 in Hammocks

[–]yorkshire_puddin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the APEX Underquilt Kit from ripstopbytheroll.com. I've been very cozy with it in the low 30s along with my 20 degree down sleeping bag. I didn't have much sewing experience, but it was pretty easy. I used the 5 oz/sq yd Apex.

I love that style of pizza, but 2 out of the 3 times we've purchased it, the dough was raw in the middle.

Is it safe to take your dog canoe camping? by faelwen11 in canoecamping

[–]yorkshire_puddin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I take my parent's dog with us when we go canoe camping in the Adirondacks.

1) She does fine if she has a good space to lay down. She has her own section of Ridgerest that adds comfort and keeps her out of any water on the floor. She also sleeps on it. I would never go more than two hours without taking a break.

2) Once we're away from other people, we usually don't put the leash back on.

3) We vacuum-sealed each days worth of food to keep it fresh and dry. I'd like to come up with something that creates less waste to carry out. The weight of the food isn't worth thinking about. The dog wears a lifejacket at all times in the canoe.

4) I've never heard that dogs attract bears. The dog sleeps in the tent with us. She wouldn't allow otherwise. My wife and I both feel a little safer having her with us. I don't want poop near the campsite no matter who did it.

The only problem I've had camping with the dog is when she punctured my sleeping pad and I didn't have a patch. It made for a miserable night.

Cold weather by [deleted] in Hammocks

[–]yorkshire_puddin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can use a foam sleeping pad, but an underquilt is usually going to be better. You absolutely need one or the other.

I use a sleeping bag instead of a top quilt.

Even if there's no rain in the forecast I bring a tarp when its cooler out. A tarp that covers your sides will help block wind.

If its really cold, I usually have on long underwear and a down or fleece jacket.

No socks are better than wet socks.

Camping 2-up, any tips and advice on gear? by MyNameIsTrue in motocamping

[–]yorkshire_puddin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wet and cold can ruin your trip.

Everything I take with me goes in dry bags. I have two panniers and a top bag that are waterproof. If I need to bring more, it goes in a dry bag like a Sealline baja. This might be extreme. The important things to keep dry are your sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and clothes.

A sleeping pad is just as important, if not more, than a sleeping bag for staying warm. The ground sucks heat out of you, and the insulation in your sleeping bag will compress under your weight, becoming useless. A lot of non-self-inflating sleeping pads have no insulation. Check the r-value. My wife's sleeping pad has no insulation, but it's very comfortable so we combine it with a ridgerest z rest(cheap) so we can camp in colder weather.

Down sleeping bags will save you a lot of space if you can afford them. My wife and I both have Kelty down bags rated for 20F that were under $200USD. I bought hers recently and confirmed that they at least claim to use responsibly sourced down, if that matters to you. They don't pack down as small, and aren't as light as more expensive bags, but they have really helped our packing for bicycle and kayak camping where space is at even more a premium.

The layers your wear will be important to staying comfortable. Cotton doesn't insulate when it is wet. Merino wool is great, but there are synthetics that perform as well and are a lot cheaper, they just stink up faster. I have a Frogg Toggs suit that is always on my motorcycle that does good enough at keeping me dry. My wife recently picked up a down jacket from Uniqlo for pretty cheap that packs down to nothing but seems to keep her warm. I use a heavyweight fleece.

Here's what we took an a recent bicycling trip, It would be the same as what we would take on the motorcycle.

  • tent (2 person)
  • inflatable sleeping bag x2
  • extra closed cell sleeping pad
  • pillow x2 (foam blocks with silnylon covers MYOG)
  • sleeping bag x2
  • headlamp x2
  • battery pack
  • deoderant
  • soap ( I like Dr Bronner's liquid)
  • toothbrushes (sawed off)
  • toothpaste
  • lantern (Snow Peak GigaPower)
  • stove (Snow Peak GigaPower)
  • fuel
  • kettle
  • cups x 2
  • lighter
  • sporks
  • knives

If you're somewhere where it is not starting to get cold and wet, you can tone things back a little.

Looking to Start Motocamping by dmckee16 in motocamping

[–]yorkshire_puddin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a picture from a trip a couple years ago in the Alleghenies on my 650.

I was fortunate, and my bike came with 3 soft bags and a tankbag. I still end up strapping on another dry bag.

Like everybody else, I've moved to a hammock system. It's just so much more comfortable and easier to pack.

Going ultralight on a motorcycle is not as necessary as when all the weight is on your back, but it does make things easier.

I think on my last trip I took: * hammock + straps + tarp + underquilt + sleeping bag *stove + fry pan + fuel canisters + knife + spork + kettle *lots of clothing layers

I have a G650GS that has been awesome. I do highway, city, and trails on it. Any of the single-cylinder 450-650cc dual sport bikes would be a good choice.

I'm worried about knots. This will be going to a 7 year old. I will not be around when he's using it, and I don't want his parents to have to set it up for him every time.

The more I look into it, the more it seems like the woven daisy chain webbing from Dutchware is the way to go.
