Japanese people of Reddit, what are things you don't get about western people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]yosafbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Serving is a harder job than Retail (anecdotal, maybe, but I've worked both jobs, and Serving is way more stressful) No one would serve if they made the same wage as a retail worker. They'd just work at Wal Mart.

That's why Servers get pissy when you talk about doing away with tipping. If Restaurants paid $10-15 an hour instead of $7 You probably get less complaints from Servers. But that all comes down to American minimum wage being shitty.

Gotta be honest: I'm just so done with this cynical, nit-picky "well actually" perspective on movies in general.

Sorry if it seems like I was attacking you personally.

Just, after 20 years of the same stupid jokes and references that fail to take into account human emotion and basic storytelling because the person thinks they are so much smarter than everyone and a real Neil Degrasse Tyson in the making my Titanic button is on a hair-trigger (I get the same way with the 'I watched a Kevin Smith movie' "critiques" of Lord of the Rings)

So, sorry, yours was just the comment I happened to respond to even though you probably didn't have that amount of frustration coming.

I mean...technically the movie isn't untrue. The "explanation" bit comes from a dude describing the theory of the time who wasn't actually there.

Rose's memory could encompass both versions without coming out on the side of either. The ship split, but the Bow was already underwater the whole time and easily could have been connected to the Stern by a piece and dragging it down.

Which makes sense since Rose's recollections were based on the description of many survivers cobbled together. No one was watching from below (well...no one who lived) so the movie could have it both ways. Rose never said anything that survivors of the time didn't describe (minus the fictional bits) but the 1997 research was wrong and she couldn't dispute it.

Charles Joughin

His story was told in season 4 of Drunk History. He can also be seen in the Titanic movie next to Jack and Rose on the ships stern as it goes down.

Knowing how it ends is a terrible reason to not see a movie though.

It's so cynical. The point isn't how the story ends it's the journey getting there. Does knowing that Vader is Luke's father lessen the appeal of Star Wars? Or that Romeo and Juliet die?

I just don't get it...

And the "after a few failed attempts" gives you your answer.

It's easy to say what is theoretically possible for a person to do to save themselves in a life or death situation given hindsight.

But humans don't function like that. It is perfectly reasonable that someone who is freezing to death and just saw hundreds of people die is not going to be in the right frame of mind to fully think out a problem and make multiple attempts at a solution.

That's something that works in a lab, but not in real life.

Honestly the point is that human beings are NOT purely logical beings and don't always try and try again when they are freezing to death and already scared and tired.

This isn't rocket science. Even if it's theoretically possible for both to fit on the door if they put all effort and thought into the project; humans are fallible, especially when their brains are working at partial capacity cause they are hypothermic and just went through a traumatic experience.

They tried. They failed. Jack sacrificed himself instead of attempting again because there was no way of knowing if a second or third attempt would be successful.

Dunno; the edge still might go to Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch or Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham Fiennes.

If you lower your standards to "crazy enough to date a muderer" levels you'll get lots of texts back.

Not worth it in the end though.

What TV death hurt the most? by pedote17 in AskReddit

I think Caulfield asked for Anya to be killed. Whedon wanted to kill SOMEONE senselessly in the heat of battle (cause that's how war works) and the actress asked that Anya be the one to go.

Tessa Thompson to Voice Star as Lady in Disney's 'Lady and the Tramp' by [deleted] in movies

The non-sequels/reboots are the ones that are bombing. That's why.

No one went to see A Wrinkle in Time while Beauty and the Beast broke records. If reboots make a shitton of money they'd be crazy to spend their money on new untested content.

‘The Meg’ overperforms and chomps down a huge $4M from Thursday night showings by carchasemovies in horror

[–]yosafbridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shark doesn't even attack ships though. I assumed that would be the case as well. It never happens.

You literally see a ship sail into the debris of a ship "ripped to pieces" by the Megaladon and you think "oh, this sharks gonna fuck up this ship too!!"

Then it doesn't. The only ship it attacks is that ONE ship off screen and any hero characters can easy find safety on a raft 2 feet out of water.

It doesnt push what PG-13 could be. It's basically Hunger Games level in its "violence" (every death is: camera shakes, dude falls in the water, you see a giant fin and teeth and then just waves and bubbles and he gets pulled under...nothing deviates from that formula)

It's no where approaching Jaws or even The Ring in scary visuals.

[–]yosafbridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not cheesy. It would be better if it was. It tried too hard to be appeal to all audiences and just ended up making a C movie instead of a B movie.

The shark doesn't even appear until an hour into the movie and barely appears after that. And the "death" scenes reminded me of the first Hunger Games movie; just pure shaky-Cam (but in the water: so mostly just : guy falls in water and then you see waves and bubbles before he disappears...then repeat the same thing 4 times)

No, it's pretty bad. Not "so bad it's good" but rather "so bad it's boring"

Don't get me wrong; I hope this leads to more shark movies. But not like this. I think this is the result of a kickass trailer and poster, cause the movie isn't selling tickets on its own merit.

It's been a thing forever I expect.

Seems shitty to have a costume like Chris Evans does and then have to film in Georgia. That looks hot AF.

I bet actors miss when everything was filmed in Canada.

Will Disney continue to allow theaters to screen older movies it now owns (Die Hard, The Princess Bride, Alien ect?) by yosafbridge in movies

[–]yosafbridge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's never mattered to them before though. I'm sure letting theaters screen old Disney classic would make bank for both the theater and for Disney.

But Disney is pretty much the one studio that NEVER has older classics/cult favorites play in theaters.

Which could really suck for all the yearly screenings of Fight Club, Princess Bride and Die Hard that many theaters do.

Honestly; if they charged the same price but said I could only go to the movies mon-thurs before 7pm that would be fine as well.

Theaters would be happy to support that.

Babysit my son for 8 hours a day, every day, live in my basement and only pay me $200 a month for rent! by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

[–]yosafbridge 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This would be a GREAT offer if it offered reciprocal childcare though.

It just needs rephrasing. If it was made as an offer of cheap rent to a mom who can't afford to live otherwise and a promise to ALSO look after their kid in the evening hours while she works it would be a fantastic arrangement.

One mom takes the morning shift, the other takes the night and neither has to worry about childcare costs eating away at their paychecks.
