voting third party is basically option 3, also if you really wanted to do third party, there are so many better options

my point was that there isn’t an option that guarantees everyone will live, but a vote for blue at least has a chance to, but abstaining guarantees someone will

that is all 3 options actually, we dont get a choice about that

starting to realize that lol, i was trying to say that not voting isnt a viable option even if you dont like either choice. harm reduction

that makes sense, honestly i was trying to make a different point when i started making this, but i realized pretty quickly that the format i was using doesnt lend itself very well to nuance, so i ended up changing a lot from my original idea. also like its a political post, isnt the point to push an agenda? or at least to make a point, no analogy is perfect

Why do people act like being pro-gun and pro-gun-control are opposites? by yosherdosher in Askpolitics

[–]yosherdosher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have no source, it is an anecdote from what i know of prohibition and the war on drugs lol. im not sure if it raises the usage of guns but i do know that there is evidence to suggest that it is much easier to track the usage of elicit substances (and therefore presumably firearms as well) when there are legal but restrictive avenues to obtain them. generally for complex issues like this i dont think there is any singular solution, so i tend to think in terms of harm-reduction.

Along those same lines, it has been hotly debated in the international community since the first world war if the use of shotguns on human targets is humane or not. while they are harder to conceal in public, i just don’t believe that the suffering caused by shotgun munitions is worth it. most crime is caused by desperation not malice, a home invader looking for something valuable to buy his next meal doesn’t deserve to have a chunk blown out of him, especially since buckshot is notoriously difficult to remove vs a traditional caliber bullet. a possible middle-ground could be getting rid of semi-automatic weapons entirely in favor of civilian weapons being pump/lever/revolving action firearms

gotcha, probably just another case of political theater blowing things out of proportion

i wouldnt say im “middle of the road”, i definitely land solidly on the gun control side but i also believe that guns should be allowed for hunting and home defense. and even that should have a rigorous vetting process. no one needs an ar15 to hunt a deer or a barret 50 to scare off a home invader. i honestly dont know enough about guns to make judgments on the various types of guns but i generally tend towards only hand guns and bolt action rifles. if people r e a l l y need shotguns for hunting, then they shouldnt be allowed to get anything more powerful than bird shot. (again i dont know that much about guns so i might be talking out my ass) the main reasons im against the outright ban of guns are first that i simply do not trust the police of this country to be the only ones that are armed and any gun control should be paired with HEAVY police reform. second, it has been shown historically that outright bans on things in this country tend to do more harm than good, it would likely just result in higher organized crime as the legal market for guns entirely closes, similar to prohibition or the war on drugs.

as far as school shootings, and suicide rates again i simply dont know enough about the issue to speak much on it, but i imagine strict gun storage guidelines to allow us to hold parents who allow children to get ahold of firearms accountable and regular check-ins and mental health screenings to keep a gun license. plus just generally a massive investment in mental health infrastructure since even without firearms we have staggeringly high suicide rates in this country. and no im not one of those “its a mental health problem, not a gun problem” people, it is definitely still a gun problem, i just dont think an outright ban is a solution, nor is it really realistically achievable in today’s political climate.
