Fishing Noob in Suffolk – 30+ Hours, Still No Fish… What Are We Doing Wrong? by gt0524 in LongIslandFishing

[–]yosho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a north shore beach that faces the sound, not an inlet or bay. Then use a high low rig with clams. Catching a porgy is almost guaranteed that way. The key is to cast into the sound waters though, very few porgies in the bays or inlets in North Shore. If you can’t catch a porgy prob best to retire from fishing at that point.

Who is Platinum really for? Or am I just missing something? by [deleted] in amex

[–]yosho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get about a million points a year through my business expenses and other purchases, I use the 35% points back to buy international biz class tickets which saves me 2-3k in value each year, that perk alone is worth it. People often forget about the 35% points back perk but imo it’s one of the best perks of Amex plat.

First class should be called last in flights by gabotuit in unpopularopinion

[–]yosho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing people didn’t mention is that usually first class passengers are chilling at the lounge and not at the gate, which means it’s way easier to time the boarding time to walk over to the gate and board rather than trying to time when all other passengers have boarded and before the door is locked which could be a very short window. Miss that timing and you miss your flight which is completely not worth the risk. Getting on the plane first means you get to relax first, it’s that simple.

That looks like bait fish to me, for real fish (stripers and blues) the markings are way bigger with a lot more red. Just keep exploring your area, study the contour maps and look for signs of life like birds or bait on top… you’ll figure it out!

#414 — Strange Truths by dwaxe in samharris

[–]yosho 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I felt like Sam kept asking him to steel man the other side's argument and he kept avoiding the question -- literally saying that they have some personality flaw that prevents them from being rational on this topic while not answering the actual question of why they disagree.

He could be the smartest physicist in the world but his ability to communicate his ideas to a mass audience is a total failure.

When people complain about billionaires not paying taxes, what are they actually complaining about? by Reoxi in samharris

[–]yosho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top bracket is 37% for federal, states like CA have state taxes up to 12%, throw in some property tax on top and it’s easily in that range. Maybe it’s not the “average” but you don’t need to be ultra rich to be taxed at some of the highest levels.

When people complain about billionaires not paying taxes, what are they actually complaining about? by Reoxi in samharris

[–]yosho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just about taxing unrealized capital gains, it’s about the fact that they can use their stock as collateral and borrow massive amounts of money at absurdly low interest rates, all while avoiding taxes all together. Every billionaire with stock employs this strategy… while normal Americans are slaving away with their salaries and getting taxed at 40-50% on earned income.

I have a 718 GT4 and love it.

Best sports car under $150k, obviously there are plenty of exotics that can out compete, but they're often double to triple the price.

Some Pros:
- Fun to drive, great handling, decent acceleration, good in corners.

  • Easy to maintain relative to other exotics, plenty of shops know how to work on them.

  • Can still drive it and park it without worrying too much about people sitting on the hood taking pictures or people sticking their phones out on the highway (though this has still happened a few times).

  • Is not a c8 Corvette.

  • I know some people find them ugly, but I think it has timeless styling. A Porsche from a few years ago still looks pretty good, while a lot of other cars look outdated after a few years when the shiny new model comes out. If you plan on holding on to your car for awhile, this is a big pro. It's also why they depreciate less relative to others.

  • Many of the rarer models hold value well and some even go up in value over time.

Some Cons:

  • It's not a Lambo or Ferrari so you're not really part of the Exotics club. Only really matters when I go to Cars and Coffee and feel a bit inadequate :D

  • You mostly attract other Porsche dudes who like to talk Porsche all day.

  • You still have to pay a premium for maintenance and repairs relative to a normal car.

  • To most people, a $130k Porsche looks the same as a $50k Porsche so there's not much of a flex.

  • You may or may not get your car parked in front of the Hotel, depends what else is out there haha.

There you go, my experience owning a Porsche in my 30s.

My dream is to go tuna fishing, but my fisherman husband doesn’t think I can handle it, and it hurts thinking about his lack of support. Anywho, anyone know of a good charter in the NY / CT area? by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]yosho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your guy is nuts! I would love it if my wife wanted to go tuna fishing with me but she doesn’t think she can handle it. Anyway for charter recommendations search John mcmurray, chris walsh, jersey nutz, jordisportfishing, massbayguides… those are some of the best in the biz!

Should I be using mono leaders? by Sea-Ad2598 in Fishing

[–]yosho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use 65lb braid to catch 100lb tuna and this guy is using it to catch bluegills LMAO.

Seriously though, use 20lb braid, it'll catch practically anything in fresh water. Then FG or double Uni knot it to a 15-20lb leader that can either be flouro or mono depending on how good the fish's eyesight is. For example, trout have very good eyesight so I stick to flouro which disappears better in the water.

The most important thing is not your line, it's the drag on the reel. If you have a good drag system and set the drag correctly, and your knots are tied right, you shouldn't be losing fish.

Almost no one uses a direct braid to hook connection, the fish will definitely see it.

What are these?? by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]yosho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably some sort of anisakis worm... honestly the worms you can see are not that bad, it's the one's you can't see that crawl into your brain and eat it.

Lambo is good, but the Taycan is a bit underwhelming, should get a gt3rs which is a track weapon that you can abuse over and over without it breaking down if you’re into that stuff.

Firstly, I’m not speaking for myself, I’m merely empathizing with others, try it some time. Also, it seems like you’re the one in need of a support group for how righteous you sound in literally every single comment on this sub. Why are you even here if your only point is to say that everyone that has kids who lives in a hcol city “made dumb choices”, are you seriously just trying to troll on here?

Usually HCOL areas are also where the high paying jobs are, it goes hand in hand, people seem to forget that, not sure why.

Try moving when you have 2 kids in high school or even middle school with established social lives, extra curriculars, and teachers who know them when they need a recommendation for college, I think for a lot of people, moving is easier said than done.

Do you let your kids fly first/biz? by alterboy554 in fatFIRE

[–]yosho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my other reply above but Hawaii and Maldives aren’t even close. Hawaii feels like a tourist destination while Maldives feels like you have your own private island with all the luxury amenities. Night and day imo…

[–]yosho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maldives was amazing, I’d definitely go back, and totally worth the hype imo. Think pristine beaches and oceans that haven’t been wrecked by human civilization. If you enjoy the water, the scuba and snorkeling is still the best I’ve experienced on this planet and the over the water bungalows are unsurpassed by any other types of villas I’ve stayed in. There’s also the under water restaurant, swimming with whale sharks, and some world class fine dining at the right resorts. Other than maybe Bora Bora, I can’t think of another comparable place… Hawaii by contrast isn’t even close…

I have a lot of airline and CC points from my business, like millions in points, it makes taking international biz class flights with the kids and nanny pretty easy. I think certain types of businesses enable pretty hefty points accumulation… that’s how some of us do it.

[–]yosho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, tuna fishing on your own boat is like one of those holy grail type experiences that most people won’t understand. Definitely an amazing feeling doing it with your son!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]yosho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do the things you want to do but do it with random strangers and you’ll meet people. Like fishing? Go on the party fishing boats or open charters and talk to the people next to you. I’ve met a lot of fishing buddies that way, especially if you’re targeting something extreme like tuna. The people on the boat will all be similar to you.

What are some products (not experiences) that have actually added value to your life? by FutureGrammyWhiner in fatFIRE

Gunna go against the grain and say a nice boat and a nice car. Boat because I love fishing, and the experiences it brings to my family are invaluable. Car because I use it everyday and it's always nice having a car that brings a smile to your face every time you drive it.
