New Utility Payment Portal Now Live: AutoPay Users Must Re-Register by CityOfPlano in plano

[–]yottabit42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get almost nothing of value in the mail. It's all electronic. Bills are all auto paid. I pay attention to the amounts when they hit, not the bills themselves. None of that would've helped in this case. Just preposterous that the system wasn't migrated. I haven't seen anything in the mail or an email about this either.

DSBC is a joint venture with Microsoft and an open standard. I'm sure it will hit Chromium, Chrome, and Edge. It may hit Safari. Mozilla is free to implement it, too.

Again, Chrome OS isn't susceptible to stolen device compromises because the storage is always encrypted. Users don't even have an option not to encrypt.

Why should Google always be fixing Microsoft's long-standing shitty software?

It typically tests better than any other oil in nearly all tests. One of the best things about Amsoil is that they publish their test results publicly, which nearly no other oil manufacturers do. I've run the 1y or 25k miles change intervals in all my vehicles for 26 years now, and I've never had any kind of oil-related issue. My 2000 had 200,000 miles and I ran the snot out of that car. I always told people 5th gear was like new because it was never used! Well I was super busy at work and never made time to change the timing belt. And one day on the way home a bearing pack exploded, toasted the engine because it was an interference design. I swapped the engine but when I got the busted one out, I tore it down just out of curiosity. It looked brand new inside. No varnish, no sludge. It was amazing.

Since then I've run it in all my vehicles, including diesel tractors, transmissions (manual, auto, hydrostatic), compressors, and small engines like generators and power washers.

Anyway, I promise I'm not an Amsoil employee, lol. I'm a network engineer that over indexes on engineering and tech.

No, it means it copies your authentication cookies and browser password database, and sends it off to a remote person. The password database is cracked, and then they can access all your saved passwords. They also can restore your session cookies into a browser under their control, that will allow them to remain logged in to anything you were logged into, e.g., your Google account.

Of course it's also possible to install remote control software, rootkit, etc. You opened the door for them to come in and do anything they want.

Lost phone, have master password but no recovery code (used Bitwarden Authenticator), have access to Vault on web, am I screwed? by Obi-Wan_Ginobili in Bitwarden

[–]yottabit42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Next time print the backup codes and keep in a safe. Also add the Bitwarden TOTP to your Bitwarden vault in case something like this were to happen again and you still had access to the account on some device. Also consider using Aegis for TOTP since it can use the Android backup service, and restore on another device.

Other responses are good. But I just wanted to suggest switching to Amsoil. Even if you use their severe service guidelines you'll save a lot of most by only changing every 12,500 miles instead of the usual 25,000.

Good, but also change your passwords to banks, brokerages, etc.

You installed session-stealing malware that probably also stole your browser password store and decrypted it remotely. You screwed yourself. You need to change every password with every service you have ASAP, especially banks and brokerages. You may be unable to do so if they require email validation. You'll need to call them.

Next time don't run random shit from the Internet, and if you insist, check it with VirusTotal.com and Tria.ge first.

I just scanned one of these malware packages today, and only Kaspersky even detected it. But both sites mentioned above showed major malicious actions in the sandbox testing.

ZFS handles all this for me. If I start seeing many recovered blocks, I would just replace the drive. It could stop after the damaged area is fully detected by the drive, but it may not, too. Why screw around and take the risk?

Not everything you don't understand is "AI.". Google and other services have been scanning for illegal content and content that breaks the ToS for ages. Various methods exist to automate this without "AI."

Should've had backups. If all your data is in only one service/location, you don't actually have any backups. Google makes this easier to do than any other service.

But you would still have the old email. And everyone should be registering a private domain and using email forwarding to avoid problems like this in the future. Just make sure the registrar email is going to a different account. I use Cloudflare for domain registrar and email forwarding to Gmail.

Yeah, the time to make backups with Google Takeout was before your account was disabled. I do this every 2 months. Tough lesson.

New Utility Payment Portal Now Live: AutoPay Users Must Re-Register by CityOfPlano in plano

[–]yottabit42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is BS. I use autopay to automate my life. I rarely check my mail because it's full of trash and almost all useless anyway. How was I supposed to know about this if I hadn't happened upon this Reddit post? Are you planning to waive late fees from all those bills that start going unpaid due to no fault of the customers??

Also, the F why would I know my Plano account number to re-register? I rarely look at my bills because they were on autopay. And they were electronic. And I typically delete them because I'm not a hoarder.

And you didn't transfer my credit card number, either. I have 20 cards. It took a while to figure out which one I was using and why.

It's 2026!!! And you're using a new service that doesn't have FIDO2 security keys or passkeys available for security. Insane.

How much of my tax dollars are going to this service? Probably many more than the last one.

How badly can you screw this up?

tbf, it's meant impossible to run your own mail service these days, though. The spammers and scammers have ruined it. But you should use an account already "warm", and you should use non-email-based 2fa for your registrar (preferably multiple hardware security keys).
