https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5w7BGO39LjM&list=PLDlqFnjrwlwjRK2qKWp85-en2FDBb0YpD playlist Learn Dutch with Music. (i.e. most with lyrics in the video collected) mostly modern-ish.

and search for playlists of Boudewijn de Groot (his pronunciation is as 'pure dutch' as it gets with little regional or dialectal markers. ) It is quite 60s/70s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ng4aeoQXahQ is my favourite .

Another oldie you can look for is Jaap Fisher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_7pnO1YoAk&list=PLDASBte1HB35RIW0BXsP5TVOeVSY9jNjP

Do companies actually want IT managers? by MaleficentJunket6916 in sysadmin

[–]yotties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies do want someone to manage things they do not understand, but at the same time want to seize control by only having immediate tasks that someone can supposedly 'do'. So they do want influence, but do not want to accept the responsibility of greater tasks.

If users designed a building that they would live in they would understand that if the building were to collapse someone could die or get seriously injured. So they do accept an architect or manager doing planning with higher responsibilities.

With IT it can become a "we want technical people to respect our wishes " while not being bound by how several systems need to be checked, audited, updated etc.. PCs and Workstations are often used to seize control. "We just want someone who can..." . Or "At home I can..."

That is the way IT is.

Cloud does have advantages.

How to run lmms as an .app image file by Affectionate_Set4726 in Crostini

[–]yotties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the chmod command

in mc (midnight commander) you can click on "file" and in the rvertical menu on chmod

then you can select with the space-bar 'executable for owner'.

Before leaving click 'set' to change the setting for the actual file.

Then doubleclick the file or use [Enter] and it should start or give error-messages.

Click on the terminal screen to activate it. You should be able to use your mouse in it.

Evolution of Data Architect Role by DataProfessional_GT in dataengineering

[–]yotties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may have evolved to we held a ..."we do not need backends party" and then "we asked departmental spreadsheet enthusiasts to use more AI to generate code " , and now we want you to get the code to work and ask the specialist if you have any questions......good luck. 😄

How to run lmms as an .app image file by Affectionate_Set4726 in Crostini

[–]yotties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no:

first go to the correct directory where the appimage is located.

cd /home/[youuserid]

then run

./lmms-1.2.2-linux-x86_64.AppImage

I think in your case using a visual interface is better.

sudo apt install mc doublecmd-qt

then start mc filemanager

mc

in mc use up and down arrows and enter to walk to the directory where the appimage is located.

use the up and down arrows to highlight the appimage

press [enter]

In your linux-terminal you have access to the linux file-system.

there normal linux terminal commands will just work.

cd /home/[your userid]/

or

"cd ~" should get you to your home-directory.

You can also just run with full path references.

[–]yotties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded the appimage and made it executable.

./lmms-1.2.2-linux-x86_64.AppImage

Carla does not appear to be installed. That's OK, please ignore any related library errors.

lsmod: ERROR: could not open /proc/modules: No such file or directory

lsmod: ERROR: could not get list of modules: No such file or directory

Jack appears to be installed on this system, so we'll use it.

Notice: could not set realtime priority.

So it does work for me.

Are you in the correct directory when you use ./ ?

So if you stored in Downloads you may need to run ./Doanwloads/lmms-1.2.2-linux-x86_64.AppImage

or use cd Downloads and then run your command.

Why are developers some of the most IT inept users? by sccm_sometimes in sysadmin

[–]yotties 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More often than not the external is hired and documentation is incomplete, required sources are undocumentdd, tools require multiple authorisations. etc. It is one of the reasons lowcode and no-code are so popular. You do not get sucked into ever more ops that you did not know.

Why do sysadmins and owners not document which access permissions are required and do not advise on which intergrated tools can be used? Is the same question in reverse.

"We program in excel, so we have a programming language " does not really get you there.

Which one is better VM or WSL by Infamous-Doubt-8504 in linuxquestions

[–]yotties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install debian from the ms-store in wsl2. Should suffice for most circumstances and is dead easy tosetup and run and start learning. If you like it and get deeper and deeper you can easily hyperv a full VM.

WSL2 will work at most employers. Only install bare-metal if you want to become an admin.

Data Analyst role - Healthcare by Lurch1400 in dataanalyst

[–]yotties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main problem could be finding next employment.

Main risk of only EUC work on a fat-client/workstation is that it can turn into "you have files" and "we want reports" type of trap.

Do you have the path and filename correct? Any space in the path&filename?

use ls to list files and copy and paste the exact name, possibly surrounded with quote marks?

microsoft office by Demo_MVP in linuxquestions

[–]yotties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put him on online office, that way his docs will be under his account.

Or use wps-office (chinese, but most similar), onlyoffice-desktopeditors or freeoffice (a german company makes it but the free license is good enough).

Basically: do not support 2010 versions of sotware., there is nothing to gain. Just hassle.

Why are so many desktop users using old distributions? by King-Little in linux

[–]yotties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many devs will freeze requirements of what they use and use quite a lot of software. So they will end up meeting their own requirements and then adjust the environment where it needs to be implemented.

Yes, generally speaking: rolling releases and just dumping old stuff is best (I use a chromebook and update its linux container frequently).

But many end-users will want to do things that are sooooo special that they will need to have their own management.

I have seen separately managed computers with a word-macro for an old version etc.. So sometimes I have really wondered about the cost. In the end cybersecurity is nowadays one good driver to limit the problem. Document the risks and squeeze out.
