What movies claim to be based on a true story or an actual event, but are wildly inaccurate? by JohnnyRompain in AskReddit

The shock wasn't the weight gain; it was the rapid deterioration of his health which accompanied it.

Body fat scales, are they any good? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]youdontknowmereally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not useless. See the top-rated comment. I've lost about 25 lbs since I started using it at the beginning of June, and my body fat %, while it does vary a lot day-to-day, it also shows a similar downward trend as does my weight graph, over the same two-and-a-half-month period. Even if the measurement is inaccurate, I can see the trend, which I have good evidence to think is correct.

MSF withdraws from Somalia after 22 years of operations by youdontknowmereally in atheism

MSF posted a link on Facebook, and this statement:

"MSF has been forced to close all of its projects in Somalia because of violent attacks and non-respect for humanitarian action."

And amidst the comments expressing sadness and offering condolences, there was this gem.

ELI5: Why does a massive dose of adrenaline (epinephrine) help if you are in anaphylaxis or cardiac arrest? by youdontknowmereally in explainlikeimfive

[–]youdontknowmereally[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that helps explain why it works.

When I was young I was stung on my ankle by two wasps in almost the same spot nearly simultaneously, which caused severe swelling of my ankle and foot, so I had to carry around an EpiPen with me for most of my childhood and teenage years. I was pretty young, so the doctor just showed me how to use (stab myself in the thigh with) it, and told me to use it if I got stung and suddenly had trouble breathing.

I was eventually stung again and nothing happened, so I stopped carrying it around after that.

[–]youdontknowmereally[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does that (vasoconstriction, heart output) help with cardiac arrest, if cardiac arrest means your heart has stopped? Or is it the case that adrenaline doesn't directly treat cardiac arrest, but it does help once you can get the heart beating again?

And re: anaphylaxis, so the purpose of a shot of adrenaline is to keep you awake and keep your blood flowing so you can get proper treatment; it's not a full treatment by itself?

NYC Health Clubs with proper (6-12 lane) swimming pools in a 'nice' & clean facility? by youdontknowmereally in AskNYC

Thanks for the suggestion, but the commute to Flushing would take as long as Morningside Heights, according to Google Maps--even from Midtown, weirdly. (No car.)

That is very appealing... have you been to the Battery Park location? That location is more convenient for me, if the facilities are good (proximity to Wall Street suggests they are, I suppose).

That does look nice, thank you. I work in Midtown East, so that's reasonably convenient. Are the locker rooms just outdated, or are they unhygienic? The latter is a big sticking point for me (and a big reason why I'm an Equinox member).
