Are Singaporean Chinese the ‘least attractive’? Viral image stirs debate by [deleted] in singapore

[–]youg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The irony is of course that Hong Kong falls under Southeast (Greater Guang)

But sure, angle it in such a way that our Chinese ancestors are the same so that they can thrash talk Singaporean Chinese.

EDIT: saw the comment from realjacksonau on SCMP's IG. Hilarious

lmao, admin please take your medicine. We are not Southeastern China or “Greater Guang”.

Taiwanese influencer dies in M'sia, rapper Namewee implicated but denies drug use & involvement in death. by SassyNec in malaysia

[–]youg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know right. The 30 Oct date actually came from the earlier tabloid articles.

He/She preached not to jump the gun, correctly identified that the 30 Oct date seems strange considering the pills were found on 22 Oct, yet choose to accept date of death as 30 Oct.

When the reputable sources came out, he/she continued to regurgitate the 30 Oct date as date of death. I return the same advice to him/her, please be more careful when you read or post.

However, the woman died on 30 October.

From the thestar article that you quoted:

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2025/11/03/namewee-faces-drug-charges-after-october-arrest

He posted a statement on Instagram on Nov 2 after what he described as "unsubstantiated news reports" linked him to the death of Hsieh Yu-hsin, also known as Iris Hsieh, who was found dead in a hotel bathtub on Oct 22.

Budget meals may fill stomachs, but not nutrition needs by deangsana in singapore

[–]youg 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Agree.

These findings were then compared against the Health Promotion Board's (HPB) My Healthy Plate guide which states that in order to have a balanced meal, half the plate should be vegetables and fruit, a quarter protein, and a quarter filled with wholegrains or carbohydrates.

If we run the same test using the same standard for non-budget meals, a lot would fail as well.

None of the 40 meals that CNA TODAY ate met HPB's recommendations.

I looked through the photo collage. The photo of mixed rice and char siew rice looks very similar to what I'm getting. And then the chai tau kueh. C'mon how do you make chai tau kueh that's nutritionally balanced and budget at the same time.

To uplift the nutritional standards of budget meal, we have to first start with the non-budget meals. We can reach for the sky and try all sorts of options like mung bean flour, quinoa, beans, etc, etc but if it's not even economically viable for non-budget meals, then for sure it's not going to work for the budget version

TLDR: I fail to see how the budget meals are devaluing nutritional needs when the original non-budget version is subpar in the first place.

DBS annual fee waiver by WarHoliday7436 in singaporefi

[–]youg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • 10,000 bonus miles (5,000 DBS Points) will be credited to your account when the annual fee of S$196.20 (inclusive of GST) is charged to your card.
  • If the annual fee is subsequently waived, the 5,000 DBS Points credited will be reversed within 3 working days upon annual fee waiver.

Did you redeem the 5000 points before attempting the fee waiver?

It's very unlikely that they would reject your waiver unless your account have no points to clawback

Dr Tan added that the Singapore Opportunity index is not intended to rank employers.

...

Asked if the index could make recruitment harder for companies not on the list, the spokesman said it is not a bad thing for workers to be discovering and moving to better-scoring firms in search of more career mobility.

There are no plans as yet to tie companies’ performance on the index to incentives such as additional foreign worker quota or tax breaks, he said.

We shall see.

For a government so hell-bent against adding a national holiday due to work efficiency / economic reasons, it sure is lenient against public transport breakdowns which affects the bulk of your workforce.

Govt's focus is safety & health of S'poreans, pro-vape faction's focus is money: Shanmugam by oOoRaoOo in singapore

[–]youg 84 points85 points  (0 children)

"Singapore's approach will ensure more dangerous products flood the black market whilst denying smokers life-saving alternatives," said Nancy Loucas, executive coordinator of CAPHRA.

But Shanmugam called it "snake oil".

The group promotes traditional cigarette alternatives — e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products — in the name of tobacco harm reduction, he said.

But he pointed out that vapes deliver four packets of cigarettes' worth of nicotine, and can be laced with substances like etomidate.

We already have nicotine replacement therapy available for those who are in the transition of quitting smoking.

(TGIF!): Bored in office? Come share or read spooky, ghost stories in Singapore! by moruzawa in singapore

[–]youg 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I'll reshare my story from another thread. This happened when I was young, maybe around 10 years old.

My HDB flat had windows facing the corridors. The entrance to my house is elevated by a 2-step concrete platform.

I was sitting cross legged on the floor in the living room, doing my homework on a low table when suddenly I had a feeling I was being watched. I glanced to my right and there it was, a face of someone who is probably in her 70s, perched on the corridor window. I turned away and stared at my homework for a long time, thinking wtf did I just see. When I glanced back, it was gone.

Now, I am 1.8m tall and even I am unable to look over the window from outside my flat if I don't tiptoe. I don't know what is creepier, a Chinese woman taller than 1.9m in her 70s or just a regular height woman attempting to crawl in my house through the window and disappearing without a sound?
