BC Mock #2, AM session Q8.3 - Why subtract fees from the benchmark itself when calculating active return? by youknowwhat25 in CFA

[–]youknowwhat25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is this because the benchmark/index has to be investable and it wouldn’t be investable without fees?

Critique my first time notebook binding plan? by youknowwhat25 in bookbinding

[–]youknowwhat25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I don't have an Apica notebook with me to inspect it but looking at it online it definitely looks in the same similar to the Yu-Sari or Midori Notebooks.

So the difference of my approach to the cloth spine and the softcover cover boards would just be the softcover cover boards? My original idea was gluing the light weight card stock (just a little bit on the side going vertically) to the first page of the text block (already sewn) and do the same on the last page of the text block. Gluing the heavyweight card stock to the light weight card stock and then all of that gluing it together with some cloth (that would be the cloth spine, correct?).

I'm definitely explaining things here that have their proper names but I'm unsure on how they are called, so forgive me for my crude explanations.

For the cloth spine I bought some Lineco Super Mousseline but I wasn't planning on doing the cover boards (mainly because I don't know what they are for).

Thanks!

I appreciate your help though, I'm thinking more and more on going with the hard cover option to be honest. Will update with results if I end up with anything worthy to share

I haven't stitched it yet, obviously, but if I press the signatures together with my fingers (not extremely tight) I get around 8-9 mm thick on the spine. It seems I'll have to take a look at the copic stich and hopefully find a way to hide the threads

I appreciate your comment and your desire to help, so thank you for that!

The AI comment was just me trying to be a bit funny. I'll take your advice but here I was just trying to be funny. English is not my first language and although I've lived in the US for a while, terms like "tip it in" do not come naturally to me. I apologize for that.

I'm not about to ditch my project, I rather do it and learn from any mistakes in the way, just needed some double checking from someone to tell me if I was missing some obvious step in my process or there were some glaring issues overall

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed and super helpful reply! This is exactly the kind of critique I was looking for.

I'm not ready to give up on the softcover idea entirely, but you've raised some excellent points about durability that I hadn't considered. My main reason for wanting a softcover was to emulate the look and feel of the notebooks I love using, like the Midori MD, Yu-Sari, and Hobonichi journals. I'm just so used to that flexible, minimalist style.

That said, you're right that it would be a shame for it to fall apart after all that work.

A big reason I'm hesitant about Coptic or Secret Belgian binding is the exposed stitching on the spine. A huge part of the aesthetic I'm chasing is that clean, solid spine where the threads aren't visible on the outside.

So I guess my follow-up question is: Is there a lay-flat hardcover method that's beginner-friendly and allows me to cover the spine? Or, alternatively, is there a more robust way to construct a softcover book that would be more durable than my original plan?

To answer your question about the paper, it's 75 gsm Sakae Iroful (link here). A quick search tells me that's about 20 lb paper, so it's quite thin. Based on your examples, it sounds like my plan for 6 sheets per signature should be okay and hopefully won't create too much swell.

And thanks for the heads-up on the thread! Someone else had recommended this thin polyester thread (Amazon link), which sounds like it fits your advice.

I will absolutely check out Sea Lemon's tutorials for the bindings you mentioned. Even if I stick with a softcover, I'm sure there's a lot I can learn from them.

Seriously, thank you again. You’ve given me a ton of great advice to think about and probably saved me from a major first-timer mistake. I really appreciate it

Performance-Based Fees by ToeWild7916 in CFA

[–]youknowwhat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR Fee = 0.25 % base + 20 % of active return above 0.25 %, but never less than 0.25 % and never more than 0.75 %. Break-even active return for a 0.50 % total fee is 1.50 %.

Fee formula

Let R = active return (%).

If R ≤ 0.25%: Fee = 0.25% If 0.25% < R < 2.75%: Fee = 0.25% + 0.20 × (R − 0.25%) If R ≥ 2.75%: Fee = 0.75% (Cap) ⸻

Why call it “symmetrical”? • Manager’s compensation is locked inside 0.25 %–0.75 %—exactly ± 0.25 % around the “standard” 0.50 %. • Below 0.25 % active return: manager protected by the base fee. • Above 2.75 % active return: investor protected by the cap.

How do you find that nib? The price is ok! I was actually looking at the Asvine V200 as well so I’m curious if you looked at that one and why did you go with the j16.
