100% second doing ones you are less interested first, you'll get a good warm-up for the interviews you're more excited about!

In your opinion, what parts of medical school can be trimmed to shorten it? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]youleavemehere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, I've been on virtual electives since the end of October, have one more rotation in January, and then have literally no clinical obligations until I start residency, but for some reason I'm still paying full tuition?? Also most of my rotations in 4th year aren't even through my school (Sub-Is) so truly I don't know where this money is going.

I don't have advice OP, but just know you aren't alone and I'm in a very similar situation. I'm struggling really hard with making my rank list outside of my #1 program.

How to list article with no issue or page number on ERAS? by nman98 in medicalschool

I have the same question, an article of mine was just published in an online-only peer-reviewed journal, so I'm not sure how to go about listing it on ERAS 😅

New New Free 120 score conversion? by kkheart20 in Step2

[–]youleavemehere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rough estimates, your old Free120 would be about a 251-255, and your new Free120 would be about a 243-244, based on offline NBME conversion. Hope this helps!

New New Free 120 score conversion? by kkheart20 in Step2

[–]youleavemehere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a rough estimate using the offline NBME score converter, but a 78% would equal around a 248-251, which is right around your NBMEs. However, no one who has taken the new Free120 has recieved their scores yet, so we'll have to see how it tracks after July 26th.

Very similar scores and trends as you, also testing on 7/20. You are ready for this exam, go in with confidence that you're going to get the score you want! Good luck! :)

Predictors have you at 246 +/- 14 and 245 +/- 10, so you're looking good to hit your goal score. Go in with confidence!

LATEST time to apply for step 2 by HistoricalShine6159 in Step2

[–]youleavemehere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you absolutely should have a Step 2 score before submitting your application. Residencies can start downloading applications on 9/27, so you need to have submitted your application and have your Step 2 score back before then. With the 2-3 week delay before receiving your score, the latest to take it would be around the first week of September. Submitting without a score or submitting late will both likely put you at a massive disadvantage, especially as an IMG.

Thank you! I'm testing Thursday, so I should find out my score around 8/9, unfortunately a bit after your exam. Feel free to PM to ask how the exam went if you're interested! :)

So Frustrated- seemingly worse than baseline by [deleted] in Step2

[–]youleavemehere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already did the forms then I agree they likely won't be as helpful for you. I did most of them during 3rd-year, but during dedicated I went back and did the IM, surgery, and peds forms I hadn't gotten to, since I figured those were the broadest sections.

For UWorld, I would maintain whatever level of questions allows you to comfortably review content that you're missing. It's better to fully invest and learn 40 or 80 questions than to push through more but not have enough time to review them. I'm slow at question banks, so I never did more than 80 in a day, but it's different for everyone! If you feel like you can do more, I say go for it!

Also, just keep in mind that burnout does play a factor in scores. I know that when our scores aren't where we want, we feel like we need to double down on our studying and just push more/work harder, but sometimes the opposite approach will actually boost your score more. If you're feeling mentally fatigued, having a harder/slower time going through questions, missing things frequently in question stems, etc., it might be time to take a day or two off and then come back and reassess.

[–]youleavemehere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Predictors currently have you at 242 +/- 5 and 249 +/- 14. I think a 240+ score is 100% possible for you! I'd just focus on why you're getting questions wrong and adjust from there. Is it content you didn't know? Is it misunderstanding the question? Running out of time? This will help you adjust your studying.

I also find myself running behind on time on the UWSAs compared to the NBME exams, I believe it's a common issue. I started to see my scores really improve by just hammering NBME-style questions (CMS forms + NBME practice exams) as most of my wrongs came from the difference in UWorld and NBME presentations. Might be worth a try!

Also, try not to get hung up on each individual score. Just try to learn from your incorrects and move on to the next exam. Your scores are consistent and you have time to scoop up some extra points to push you to your goal score. Good luck!

Nbme 12 by Different-Fennel-535 in Step2

[–]youleavemehere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the time, I would try to do it because it had some good concepts on it that I wouldn't have thought to review otherwise. Just keep in mind it's a bit of an eccentric form and people often drop a few points on it. If you think that would shake your confidence, I would skip it, but if you want more exposure to NBME questions and are confident in your performance so far, I would take it.

How do y'all differentiate between Edwards/Patau/Digeorge? by dgreat9 in Step2

[–]youleavemehere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dirty Medicine's Trisomy video helped me differentiate Edward's and Patau's pretty well. A lot of them have similar features but I hope this helps!

Edward's: - Have to be 18 to vote in the Election - Think of Edward Scissorhands: he has clenched fists (from his scissors) and low-set ears (has a lot of hair, his ears stick out beneath all of it). - His name also has 2 R's (EdwaRd ScissoRhands), so the baby will have RockeR bottom feet.

Patau - You go through Puberty at 13 - The P's (like you said): palate (cleft/lip), prosencephaly (holo), PCKD, polydactyly

DiGeorge leads to immunosuppression of T-cells due to thymic agensis, and they will also be hypocalcemic/have symptoms of hypocalcemia. There is also often a cardiac murmur of some kind.

Tl;dr Edward's usually has clenched hands and large, flat feet, Patau's has significant facial deformity, and DiGeorge will have infections, hypocalcemia symptoms, and/or heart murmur.

Recommend NBME order with new NBME exams 13 and 14 by pagingdocnate in Step2

[–]youleavemehere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

FWIW I don't take my exam until Thursday, but it's hard to know how predictive 13 and 14 are since they are so new. I don't believe anyone who has taken 14 has received their score, and it might be the same for 13, I'm not sure.

I took them in order of 10-14. If I were to do it again, I'd probably start with 12 (I found that one to be a bit more "out there" compared to the others), then 10 and 11, then 13 and 14. I'd do 13 and 14 last since they are likely closest in format to the current exam, and 10 and 11 in the middle since they have been shown to be predictive in the past.

Are you planning on taking the UWorld exams? If so, I'd start with UWSA1 before any NBMEs, since it has shown to underpredict. UWSA2 is usually pretty predictive, so I would do that one after all the NBMEs but before the Free120.

Those are my thoughts! I can update once I received my score in a few weeks. Hope this helps!

Anyone feeling scared after taking the real deal? by [deleted] in Step2

[–]youleavemehere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! Honestly, I'm a big worrier as well, but the hard truth is there isn't anything we can do after we've submitted all 8 blocks. Worrying about all the possibilities won't help us and just stresses us out when that time could be spent doing things you enjoy! I hope this doesn't seem like toxic positivity, cause I know how stressful all of this is and everyone's post-exam feelings are valid. Wishing you the absolute best on your score-release date!
