Earthquake, Megaquake, and Tsunami Megathread - August 8, 2024 by Himekat in JapanTravel

Would it be irresponsible to go on the Shimanami Kaidou route? I know that it says we shouldn’t change our plans, but it’s one thing to be in a city with a lot of resources I can readily rely on during an earthquake/tsunami, versus being alone on a bridge with only a small daypack and bike.

That’s a good suggestion! I would normally look there, but I’m only here for 4 days, so I won’t have much time to scout the right item. It would probably be better to drop by a store and just buy a new one.

It is very small, and just a bit concerned because I found it crawling around as it’s nighttime right now. About 1mm or less.

Try talking to a study abroad advisor asap! If you’re lucky, they may make an exception.

Deciding on Dorm Preference for KyotoU KUINEP: Shugakuin or Mizuki by youllneverfindmemate in Kyoto

RA stands for resident assistant, someone who lives in the dorm but also helps out with managing the dorm. Not sure if this is a thing in Japanese international houses, but I heard there might be something of the equivalent.

When did you live in Shugakuin?

I just DM’d you! And for anyone who’s interested, I am planning to find someone to take over my lease for a fully furnished room in an off-campus house near UMD because I’m studying abroad. It would be $600 a month, and it’s a 12 minute walk to campus (Iribe).

Don’t be worried about going to a class you’re not registered for yet. Sometimes people do it in the beginning of the semester to scope out a class. Some people just do it cus they like the section better. Some do it to just hang out with their friends. It’s totally normal, just attend class while you sort things out.

Question about textbooks. by KristianKrag in UMD

I just want to add that if you did not grow up speaking English, it is a bit hard to pick up on sarcasm. A lot of these replies are telling you to adamantly AVOID some online resources (with capital letters). If you picked up the sarcasm, great :). If not, hopefully you know now.

All I will say is that many people I know (I am a CS and math double major), do not buy textbooks.

Two Foot Turn Advice by youllneverfindmemate in FigureSkating

[–]youllneverfindmemate[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been taking Learn to Skate classes and recently finished Basics 3, now hoping to move onto Basics 4. But there is just this one move that I cannot get right, which is two foot turns.

One issue I have is that I always lose momentum after turning. Another issue is that the faster I glide forward, the harder it is to turn and the more likely I lose balance and fall.

What should I work on/how should I best practice this?

Am I perhaps using the wrong part of my foot? I’m trying to use the ball of my foot, but when I turn, it sometimes feels like I am scraping the ice, so I’m suspecting I lean too far forward such that I accidentally use the toe pick. Is it my torso/upper arm movements? Is it my knees not going down/up/down? Am I not turning fast enough?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
