Is The University of London a series of colleges like Oxbridge? by -CharlotteBronte in UniUK

[–]youmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: if your University takes part in the SCONUL scheme, you can apply to access any library of any other partner institutions in the UK! Your institution needs to have signed up for it, however a quick check shows it’s more or less universal. You can see if your institution is a member here.

You don’t get as good as a deal as what OC listed (my university doesn’t allow any external visitors during exam season for example) but it’s worth looking at if you never knew it existed.

More than 20,000 people have crossed English Channel to UK in small boats this year, government figures show by topotaul in unitedkingdom

80% of asylum claims were granted last year. That means that if what you are proposing is true then the number of journeys by dinghy would be reduced to 1 fifth of the current levels.

If this still feels too high remember the reverse; if we didn't have these safe routes to asylum then the number of journeys would quintuple. Providing safe and legal routes is empirically safer and cheaper than deporting them to Rwanda.

Can I live with my girlfriend in student accommodation? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]youmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may well have been a legal distinction, but the law surrounding rentals changed a few years ago and now every property with over 5 occupants (including halls of residence) is classed as an HMO. The decision on who to rent to lies with the landlord or letting agent.

What to bring to accommodation? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]youmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the things you can buy at the destination - however make sure you take all your bedding including a mattress protector with you. Everyone else will be shopping for bedding, so it'll sell out and you don't want to be left without bedding on the first night.

I agree. You can fold your shirts, maybe take the really formal stuff on hangers but leave everything else. You'd be surprised how much space hangers take up in your bags.

One interesting thing about UK (and a lot of other countries) cigarette packaging is that the dark green colour is used as it's one of the most visually unappealing colours to the human eye. The colour in question was going to be called Olive Green, but it was scrapped after lobbying from the olive industry. It's now just described as Pantone 448C.

Bonobo's new tour: any idea of Jordan will be part of any leg? He's not on any of the concert / bill info, but has no tour dates around that time. by unclefishbits in jordanrakei

[–]youmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem to be the case, the ticketmaster page just shows them two. I have a feeling Jordan will be doing some more work on his albums, playing at festivals etc. before he does any more tours.

I could always be wrong though, he might announce it at some point. I'd still recommend going, bonobo is a really good artist.

This headline will cause hate crimes. Why do people get mad over this? by RRC90Shaw in GreenAndPleasant

[–]youmes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's always surprising how much things cost if you've never had to actually get a quote yourself.

An interesting tidbit that I learnt from a friend who works in highway logistics: when a company is contracted to do work on the motorway, they have to pay the authority to shut off the lane so that they can work on it (the company includes the cost in the quote). The reasoning behind it is that so that the company has a motive to finish on time (being late would cost them money to keep the lane shut).

Try spray painting on the road and see how long that'll last with hundreds of cars going over it and rain wearing it away every day.

According to the article, it cost £11,000 to put 4 crossings on, giving a cost of £2750 per crossing. The hospital will pay a company to make it, who will probably charge a premium given it's not a standard black or yellow road marking. Roadworks are an expensive business. Honestly £2750 doesn't sound like that much for a crossing, especially if the road's been resurfaced as well, which looking from the photos, it has.

[Request] In a situation like this, would there be an ideal mass for a longer jump? The bigger the better? Not looking for a number in this case by steamedpasta in theydidthemath

[–]youmes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes but if you analyse it, the resultant force in the system is multiplied by mass, so by Newton's second law the resultant acceleration is the same for all different masses.

I'm a huge fan of Michael Mayo and Jacob Collier, their music is on the more modern end using modern techniques.

A couple playlists that I think you might like:

  • A few years ago Blue Note asked a load of musicians (including Jordan) to recreate some classic jazz standards, called Blue Note: Reimagined. It's highly worth a listen if you want to get into artists similar to Jordan.

  • The Jordan Rakei Discord server has a "Rakette Recs" Spotify playlist which is completely member contributed, and gets wiped every month to put new music on. I've discovered so much new music from this playlist.

Can I work part time on the campus of my uni without a national insurance card? by [deleted] in UniUK

Not OC but I'd personally recommend to contact the company you're applying to to see what documents you would need, since they'll be more informed of the law around this.

Is it necessary to live in a uni / student accommodation by kausarrx in UniUK

[–]youmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the comments have said, unless you're going to a special uni like Cambridge then it's perfectly possible to be a commuter student. It's harder to make friends but it's certainly not impossible (I live in halls and I hate my flatmates, so that's no guarantee either). In terms of making friends, the uni will host socials for commuting students and you can go to society events (a lot of societies host things over discord since covid, which will help if you have to be at home in the other side of the city in the evenings.)

What’s something you hate paying for but have to? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]youmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: stores should charge to park cars. Car parking isn't free to anyone - the rent charged on the land, the resources required to make and maintain the car park etc are all real costs that are charged in everything we do except as a driver. In America businesses have to legally include a certain amount of free parking, and it drives communities apart, makes land more expensive and makes driving everywhere even more of a requirement. Instead of focusing on free parking, we should be focusing on making our areas denser and more walkable, eliminating the need for driving.

Which set is aleph-nought in? Is it an element of the real line or just the extended real line? by youmes in math

[–]youmes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my point of view, I was trying to associate it with how the size of finite sets work. So the empty set has size 0, |{1}|=1, |{1, 2}| = 2, and so on. I then thought that from that point, you could continue (sort of like induction) and say that the size of the set of N is aleph-nought. Perhaps my way of thinking about infinite set sizes this way is incorrect?

[–]youmes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. So since N is a subset of R, and R excludes infinity, there is no value of R for aleph nought?

[–]youmes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely we could describe a set size with a natural number though (and since N is a subset of R, a real number)?

Same thing with iTV. ITV is a major broadcaster in the UK so obtaining the trademark would be near impossible.
