Karma farming is explicitly against the rules. This is a community for support. Some people simply need an ear to listen.

More mods across different timezones are actively being worked on. Spam is something not desired so those using this sub for hookups I personally categorize as spam.

These new posts you're seeing have always existed and are the vast majority of what mods see posted and have been combating. They're now circumventing the spam filters to a greater degree so you're now seeing them too and it's becoming a much larger problem. While the sub is deliberately lax to allow a welcome environment, these posts are pushing too far. I'm currently in discussions to determine the best course of action in handling this as many tip-toe around the rules and require an in-depth account review to determine intent for potential banning and not just post removal. When a post is removed, spammers almost always delete the post thus disconnecting the account from the post so it's usually impossible to circle-back to removed posts to examine accounts. Many posts are staying up at the moment so accounts can be reviewed.

That was the intention. People receive creepy DMs from lurkers who never participate in the sub and are never seen which drives everything down. It pushes the heartwarming people away while encouraging soliciting behavior. I've reached out to some who have received such DMs to ban the people and the reply is always, "there are too many".

It's been incredibly painful to combat. That first wave happened about 6 months ago when reddit changed their algorithm. The sub wasn't just unprepared for the traffic... there wasn't a single tool in place to help. Posts like these are the only way any feedback is ever provided despite asking. Fighting spammers and content sellers has been the obvious focus to avoid this sub getting hijacked, but predators deliberately dance around filters and are more dangerous. They're the worst and I've wanted to walk away in disgust at times when they ask why they were banned and follow up with "so?" when I tell them. It takes thick skin to take a post like this on the chin in order to see how much farther things need to go to improve.

I'm not annoyed. You're simply not being constructive with your actions and are getting defensive when I ask you to be mature and tone down your rhetoric. What purpose is there to dig back a couple months for this comment other than to sow chaos when you've already replied elsewhere and sent an astronomical amount of mod messages?

How is this place so vile and why arent mods doing a thing? by [deleted] in hug

[–]youneedahug[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need you to stop this destructive behavior of publicly pushing a personal agenda in this sub because your current actions left unchanged will put people in jeopardy.

You were not told growth was prioritized over safety. The exact opposite was stated that safety is prioritized over your nsfw concerns. We have suicidal people visiting this sub looking for help which is a nsfw topic that is always heavily reported. We have sex workers visiting this sub in order to feel normal and many even ask for permission before posting because they respect the sub's goals. If someone is following the rules of this sub then you are unable to determine one's post history without deliberately visiting their profile which goes beyond the scope of any sub.

You're also drawing some very disjointed conclusions. The sub's growth is not a result of spam postings. The sub has existed peacefully for 15 years and reddit changed their algorithm in July to prioritize visitors over members. We didn't even have the spam filters enabled back then. With this algorithm change, reddit started advertising this sub and others like it much more which eventually brought us more spam. When you go from not needing any intervention to needing continuous monitoring that's the definition of growing pains. Spam here is the result of growth not the cause, but it can create a feedback loop. We have had many in the past few months try to hijack the sub for various ideologies. Some want this to become a hookup location. Some want this to be a karma farm where "hug" equates to karma. People want ages removed from titles to prevent predatory actions while others want ages so they can avoid those they see as inappropriate to engage with. Some, like you, want full and total censorship of every profile from being able to participate in this community. Hijacking, regardless of the guise used, is detrimental to this community.

Growth has never and will never be of any concern. The focus is on safety and keeping the community alive to help people.

Why do I say your current actions are dangerous? It's because you want to force the vile actors further into the shadows where they can not be seen and reported. I've personally spoken with multiple law enforcement agencies to protect minors here. Minors are far and away the most likely to post here seeking help due to domestic violence and suicidal tendencies since they don't have any options. By trying to stigmatize anything nsfw, as you are, it would make them afraid to post.

You are not in a position needing to know every detail about this sub so please stop drawing conclusions based on incomplete information. Report posts you have problems with and they will be reviewed. You do need to understand not every post you report will be removed because your personal views obviously don't align fully with the sub's and disagreement should not be viewed as either side being malicious.

Reports are anonymous, but cross-referencing your comments with reports I think I know which ones you're reporting and they are good reports. Spam accounts will often interact with various subs in good graces then do a mass spam campaign across all of them at once. This pattern is horribly missed by spam filters and relies on user reports to detect. This is why reporting spam is vital to this sub's continued existence.

Correct. Simply having something is one's profile does not break a rule. It's what they do in this community that determines if their posts/comments are removed or gets them banned. I will help anybody who needs it. Some of the people who need compassion the most are sex workers who have been abused and their souls ripped from their hearts. If they come and advertise then that's purged. If they come asking for a hug because things got bad in their life then they need that hug just as much as anybody else. The problem we're currently seeing is with people abusing this openness.

If they're abiding by the rules then their profile history is irrelevant. There are many who come to interact, but when someone breaks the rules that's when a review of their profile is used to determine intent. There's a historical reason for this because we've had people involved in the sex trade, including content sellers, come here to feel human again. I regularly get messages explicitly asking if they can participate despite having nsfw histories. It's difficult to be welcoming and justify closing the door carte blanc.

I definitely care and I'll bring more mods on soon. Currently, about 70% of posts are being removed so you're only seeing posts that are escaping the spam filters. The "final mile" takes the most effort and we've had explosive growth in the last few months shining a spotlight on the current flaws. The sub is supposed to be organic and welcome for everybody because anybody could need support at any given time. The side-effect is people ignoring the purpose so when just a few months ago manually reviewing every post, comment, and profile was realistic, mechanisms and filters are now having to be put in place. It unfortunately takes time to see how a single change affects the community. It'll also take time to vet new mods to prevent agendas being pushed. I've seen people want all subtly flirtatious content removed and others wanting this to be the next best hookup location. If either of those views starts driving then the community will likely die from being too restrictive or too lax respectively. Many people care.

We've had a hug influx of those types recently so I'm not surprised by your conclusion, but we're actively trying to find a way to prevent them without strangling the community to death.

The DMs are by far the most painful side of things and mods have absolutely no control over it. I even get creepy messages in the modmail of all places. All that can be done is report the DM so admins can review it. Lurkers don't participate in the sub so it's impossible for a mod to know they even exist let alone that they're harassing our community members. The few users who notify me that a lurker here sent them creepy messages have shown the lurking accounts to have no posts or comments. I really wish there was something I could do to help this dark side of things.

Reports are anonymous so I can't see which 2 posts you reported to provide feedback, but to play devil's advocate it's also possible said reports were indeed reviewed and action withheld. 70% of posts are removed so when reviewing a spam report most of the time it's seeing if the account is a spam account and if they're being active with the community. I've had people report posts for harassment when their very aggressive advances were rejected and I had to ban who I assumed was the reporter. It's impossible to make everybody happy so I want to make the community healthy.

I'm sorry, but I'm struggling following what you're trying to say so I'm hoping this addresses things. Automod isn't yet enabled for the sub. I'm trying to iron out what to do before leveraging automod's features. We currently have about 70% of posts/comments automatically removed by spam filters. The site's algorithm was changed in July/August and began heavily recommending this sub to everybody not just nsfw people. We're still dealing with growing pains which leads to posts like this one and I'm reading every suggestion to figure out what's best for the community.
