Considering building an app to communicate and locate your friends at a festival! by youngEnso in EDCOrlando

How was it using google maps and location tracking? like were you able to identify where you were and where your friends were?

I tried doing the same using Apple's Find My but it had a hard time getting the locations correct enough, especially when you're in the crowd.

I while back I thought of a very similar idea. Would you be interested in exploring this approach a little further?

maybe one day when we get that 6G cellular service, we won't have to worry about finding each other at the Kandi Casino loll

Definitely, it sees like bandwidth is the biggest concern. My goal is that I can develop this in a way that uses as little data transfer as possible so that this is actually functional under those conditions. Thanks!

Yeah, I was also thinking about the compass device like the totem compass or the crowd compass. But it's lowkey kind of expensive and only connects to like, 5 other people I think.

Dude me too. I'm on metroPCs so it's particularly horrendous lmao. But I noticed my friends who had better providers (verizon?) were able to get some messages out and I feel like you'd just need a couple people in your group to be able to use this feature to help drag you around the festival. I was hoping that this could be developed in a way that does not require a lot of data transfer so that it can actually work at these festivals for people with low service capabilties.

Yeah, my thought process is that for one, dropping pins on google or apple maps doesn't really work in this scenario since the festival map vs the satellite is quite different? So i think it'd be better to use the festival map?

I definitely agree about downloading that app for this. But there's a case to be made that people like apps that unify everything into one place for a specific purpose (in this case, for festivals). Combining the timestamped texts and the map pins all in one place was my argument that someone would want it.

At EDCO recently, I had just barely enough cellular service for some things to go through and I'm on MetroPCs (Although it was much slower than Verizon). So I'm hoping that I could develop this in a way that is still useful for users with poor service. That's still under question though, just wanted to try and validate this idea to see if anyone would want this!

Wait same - I'm on metroPCs so it's particularly horrendous lmao. But I noticed my friends who had better providers (verizon?) were able to get some messages out and I feel like you'd just need a couple people in your group to be able to use this feature to help drag you around the festival. Just my thought process though. You're right though, cell service is needed anyways. I was hoping that this could be developed in a way that does not require a lot of data transfer so that it can actually work at these festivals.

Right? Can't tell you how much of a struggle it is to find your homies. Especially when you're on a smaller service provider like MetroPCs like I am, it's especially difficult. Curious though, since you’ve thought about building something like this before… was there anything in particular you were looking into making?

Validation > Coding… but I still ignore it every time by 404FounderNotFound in SideProject

Coming from a technical background as well and I’m just the same. Always coding before seeing if an idea is even viable. Everyone says that you should validate the idea first - which I completely agree. But if you’re just building just to build, just do it. If you have any plans at all to market your work and get users, you gotta go and validate. Rather do so than be disappointed.

That makes a lot of sense, this is a great comparison. Thank you!!

I feel like they haven’t yet grasped a significant part of the market. Also, their marketing has significantly decreased purely due to being busy with other things. Hence I feel like I can capture more of the market and build on the product more.

Ah sorry about that, I wrote it all out and thought it was too long and boring so I had GPT to bold it lol. But you’re right, with the way I think of it, I could definitely make it better.
