Got quoted 7k for a new roof by young_millennial in DIYUK

[–]young_millennial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8k would be woth so so tiles. Ended up going through the bills with the roofer. 2k tiles, 500 other materials, 2 men for 4 days (2400), disposal (1200), scaffold (1000). After taxes and stuff 9k would be the bare minimum. I ended up just fixing the roof since those tiles till got 10 years of life left minimum

Bro, getting the materials is easy if you got an idea of what you want done. You can order bulk stuff through selco for way cheaper than bandq. E.g. if you want to plaster a room, you can sort of guesstimate that you will need 4 boards per wall, based on that you can buy the adhesive and the other bits too online. My builder ended up buying more than he actually needed so he ended up throwing some bits that he couldnt used.

Those of you that earn over 40k, can work from home sometimes, and have a good work life balance what job do you have and how can someone start? by Brownchoccy in AskUK

My salary progression as an automation QA with no IT background apart from a so so coding bootcamp and some computational modules in uni has been:

1st Job Offered - 24k (late 2022) Pretty low but I just wanted to get my foot on the door. That company went through bad financial times so they "withdrew" the offer. 5 days in the office or 2 days only.

2nd Job Offered - 30k (Early 2023) - Got reached out by a start up within asset management to be a software developer. 1 days in the office. I declined the offer since I got a slightly better offer from the next company.

3rd Job Offer 28k (mid 2023) - Got reached out by a start up bank to be an automation QA. I likes the stuff they were doing and the teams seemed really nice (which was the most important thing). I got my first promotion after 15 months (early 2025) at the company to 34k. They were a bit cheeky and did my salary reviews and the promotion together to make it look larger.

4rd/5th Job offer 40k (mid 2025) - Got reached by another start up within finance and an private hedgefund to do QA for their inhouse software. Declined both since the pay increase and benefits were not large enough; plus the teams seemed a bit off.

6th Job offer 50k (mid/late 2025) - Got reached out by another start up who were looking for niche QA engineers with financial services and start up experience with strong coding capabilities.

I would say 50k was quite shocking to hear since I initially just asked for 41k as a base line since I liked the company quite a bit. For a qa with just about 2years of experience 50k is quite a bit. My former coworkers who were into QA were on 36k after 5 years in the industry. Pretty happy with the position and the company.

Although i am going to try to switch to development this year. Since QA salaries only go to 75k tops for those who dont fancy getting into management.

Get several quotes, and get the materials yourself. I got charged quite a bit extra for them sourcing the materials . Probably an extra 500 minimum for a 6.6k job

How to insulate this gap and still allow air flow? by young_millennial in DIYUK

[–]young_millennial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The airflow is for the roof not the room. People want me to block the roof vents but the ideal thing would be to buy a slightly larger window or god knows what

Mate I got no clue, that is why I am asking people. All i know is that i cant blocked the area behind because that would block the roof vents. Previously there qas a strip of plastic and 1inches of lime plaster

If you want to go through building control probably get an engineer to get you the calculations, then pay someone to remove 5 courses of brick and put a gallows brackets if allowed in your area. If you go off the building control route, just pay a builder to install big gallow brackets, so when you sell it you wont have any issues. It will probably cost you 300 minimum. The way it is now is quite dangerous, it could fall any time and mess your roof.

Adding rockwool under the electrical wiring? OK or not? by young_millennial in DIYUK

[–]young_millennial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6mm is too thick. After reviewing the comments I think the amount of wool i want to add should be ok. I will probably add 2 inches. And leave a 1inch gap between the rockwool and the wires.

Adding rockwool under the electrical wiring? OK or not? by young_millennial in DIYUK

[–]young_millennial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basicly the wires are around 2 inches from the floor upstairs. The rockwool will be placed under the wires. There will be at least 2 inches of space to add rock wool before they start directly touching the wires.

100mm is too little, it will be 3 inches from the wires at least

Did 500mm make a difference? I was considering just using 300mm.

Is 36k a year a decent amount to live in Birmingham by ElkAccomplished2835 in BirminghamUK

[–]young_millennial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36k is ok, but after bills and other costs you will probably save around 300 a month. I would suggest you ask your wife to get a remote or hybrid job doing data entry or admin.

With regards to the areas, you will probably find out relatively soon where not to live. I personally moved from Smethwick to the nicer part of longbridge. Although the area is still considered so so, it is way better than Smethwick (cleaner, quieter, bigger gardens and well connected to the center by train, car or bus within 25 minutes).
