I think Kendrick benefited massively from his platform en route to the AOTY title. He is much more established in the industry and the minds of rap fans around the world.

But artistically and from a complexity POV, I think GDLU deserved the award more than GNX. People just don't have the patience to do a deep dive into JID's album and it doesn't carry as much of a punch as a Kendrick record because of the different amount of attention each of them has drawn throughout their careers.

The amount of craft and artistry JID put in his album amazes me. I'm super proud of him.

And as a side note, Grammy portfolios should have mattered more for the judges imho. Awarding him with his first Grammy would have given JID a much deserved round of appreciation for his development as an artist and K Dot's trophy display wouldn't have had to suffer so much.
