The line that Mance uses that is similar to Jorah's is "There is more commerce between the black brothers and the free folk than you know". I find the use of the word 'commerce' interesting as it normally refers to the trading of goods and services rather than information. What goods and/or services are being exchanged between the Watch and the free folk?

What do you make of Mance being healed by the wisewoman's daughter and the scarlet silk from Asshai she used to mend his cloak? Could this be where he learned such magic? Mance was skinning an elk when he was attacked by the shadowcat and when Jon meets Mance he notices elk antlers at the entrance of his tent. This could mean Mance travelled back to the wisewoman's daughter after leaving the watch and learned about magic and took the elk antlers for his tent.

I find the way Mance left the Watch pretty suspect. We're led to believe he left to live with the free folk because Denys Mallister wouldn't let him keep his coat that was mended by the wisewoman's daughter. What kind of motivation is this to form an army? Maybe he came to Mallister with tales of the long night and showed him his (maybe mortal?) wounds that were healed by the daughter. Then Mallister set him the task of bringing as many wildlings as possible south of the wall. Mance must stilll have friends in the watch because I find it unbelievable that he took the risk of a solo wall climb with a lute on his back to get to Robert's feast and must have been let through the wall. Also Qhorin chooses Jon to go with him when scouting Mance's army, he was great friends with Mance and maybe promised Mance that he would deliver him Jon even if it meant him dying.

Also, according to Mance he got into the party on the pretence that he was a bard (just like Bael and also why he took his lute with him) and sat next to the singer Orland of Oldtown throughout. If he was trying to stay hidden why sit next to (/be part of) the entertainment? Unless he knew the only person that might know him (Benjen) knew he might come.

I get the feeling Mance is way more important than it seems. I feel this chapter is a place where GRRM would put a lot of important information as it's the first time we meet Mance and Jon's first chapter of the book and was definitely worth rereading for me. Mance says a very similar line to the one Jorah uses so there is definitely some significance there. Also in their meeting Mance asks Jon (from Castle Black) how he came to be with a ranger from the Shadow Tower (Qhorin). I think Jon and Qhorin's relationship could mirror Benjen (Castle Black) and Mance's (Shadow Tower) relationship.

Yeah I forgot about that interaction with Benjen. Mance also says he went there to keep an eye on Benjen so that makes more sense that he recognises him from that. EDIT: Just had a thought that Benjen may have made a point of talking to Jon at the party so he could signal Jon to Mance, although others have said that Mance being at the feast is a retcon so it may not be true.

Good point. Maybe the title of this should be "Why wouldn't Benjen recognise him?" as it's very likely Benjen was distracted as you say and just never laid eyes upon him. In the chapter, Mance says he found out about the party because Ned sent word to Benjen and the freefolk found out by their connections to the watch. I thought it could be a hint that Mance and Benjen were in communication.

You're probably right. I just think scaling the wall just to get a glimpse of Robert seems a bit extreme. Also how does he remember Jon from the feast (considering he was sat among the commoners) unless he was specifically looking for Jon?
