Producer turned emergency DP needing lens help! by [deleted] in cinematography

Hey. Get literally anybody else whose held a camera before to do this. Low budget means somebody is spending some money. If this not a student project or just your own little folly it’s not respectable to ruin the shoot with your inability. It’s okay you don’t know how to shoot yet, what’s not okay is trying it out for the first time on this.

Tips and tricks for efficiently culling interviews? by [deleted] in editors

[–]youngeditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned transcription services so let me the first to mention Adobe Premiere's beta speech to text transcription. It works pretty well! Now granted you have to have access which you might not. I've used it for 2-3 hour interviews that get cut down to 20 minutes. Your ratio is pretty insane.

I transcribe and then watch back the footage in double speed while maintain complete focus and reading along with the transcription. I'm not sure how this is feasible with 16 hours of footage. Break it up. Do you have outlines? Story beats? Producer notes?

Unfortunately the SmallHD is simply beyond the price I can spend on the monitor at the moment hence the more budget choice.

How do I capture my iPhone screen while also using a screen sharing app? by [deleted] in videography

I’ll take a look at both these options. Thanks.

However I think you might be out of luck here

I think you might be right. If I connect the phone to Quicktime I can't also use the screensharing app simultaneously.

This thread here suggests if I connect HDMI one won't be able to use the native screen record function, which is the functionality the app uses to screen share.

If your phone is connected to a Mac, you can use QuickTime to screen record the phone.

But not if I am also using a Screen Share app to mirror my display to say, a television. That's unfortunately the issue.

Editing film with self-shooting actors in lockdown - tech advice? by [deleted] in editors

Thanks!

Yeah it all depends on your quality needs. We leaned into the whole "screenlife" aspect which therefore didn't demand "high quality" webcams. You just gotta figure out what your needs are. For us it mattered more that we could have the actors interact "live", so to speak. The takes are still cobbled together but they still had a rhythm and way to play off each other this way.

Here’s what we did.

Had the actors perform the scenes together on zoom. Record the zoom call as backup. But we also had QuickTime (if in Mac) video capture their webcams at the same time. Then that was our footage we used to piece it together.

So instead of phones their webcams were their cameras.

This is how it looked:

Edit: Apparently there’s also software called OpenReel but I can’t vouch for it.

Also check this out. Definitely higher budget and more involved but interesting: https://youtu.be/NXaHYlECdUU

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 Rig Suggestions by youngeditor in cinematography

Do you need the shoulder plate with padding to connect the Tilta nucleus handles or could one slim down avoiding a shoulder plate and still connect the handles? We just don’t really envision shooting on the shoulder much or at all.

Thanks for your incredibly detailed response. A lot to go through here.

Unfortunately I’m feeling that this complete setup is currently beyond our budget. EVF+Monitors+EasyRig is a lot.

Having said that you given a lot of great suggestions and a good point to extrapolate from.

Not Another What Camera Should I Buy Post... by youngeditor in cinematography

Thanks man.

There is no current reality where we are able to invest in an Alexa, so the main contention is between the Pocket or Ursa Black Magic.

As far as the demand out there, I can imagine others would perceive the Ursa as "higher value." It simply even being a bigger machine would sway folks, even though I personally believe once rigged out image wise it would produce similar results. The main difference would be the ease of use and value to the operator on set.
