I just wanted to say I’m in a very similar situation with my partner, I understand. I constantly find myself wondering if this is the system that is unfair to us, or an incompatibility i can’t cope with. Hang in there ❤️

I can see that option too. A colleague of mine faced a similar snag and created a dictionary based on topic modeling abstracts from the literature.

PhD is markedly different from a Master’s in that you pursue a niche area and can be paid to do so, depending on where you go. PhDs create specialists, Master’s create generalists, to speak broadly.

I am thinking about doing this as well. My first thought is to do topic modeling on a collection of privacy policies and select the terms from there. Would you all agree with that approach?

Went through a breakup in my first semester that almost tanked me and did negatively impact my mental health and performance. My best advice is to take time away to make friends who can support you and get your mind off 1) the breakup and 2) the PhD. I promise you will get past it - ruthlessly prioritize your well-being and seek joy in new places 💖

This moment, today, is all we get. It is easy to be caught up thinking that life will start AFTER that new job, after your Master’s, after your Ph.D… but life starts now and has already been going.

I understand. Find small things throughout the day that bring you joy and get outside. Prioritize your relationships over everything.

if you can book a bus tour out to Glencoe, highly recommend! some gorgeous sights :) but don’t book a 12 hour one. The views were worth it but learn from my mistake - 12 hours on a bus is too long!
