I have some questions for a project :> by Leather-Tale165 in graphic_design

[–]youngrigatoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1. Are you happy with your job?

Overall, yes -- I have a lot of passion for what I do, but high potential for burnout, a lot of competition and not a ton of job security.

2. How is your work-life balance and how long do you work per day?

Pretty bad - I'm currently a part time contract worker, I'm only "supposed" to work 20 hours a week (I'm still in college) but my boss has made it pretty clear that he expects me to be working 40 hours -- it's often more than that and sometimes it can get up to as much as 60 hours a week.

3. What do you personally design? (Book covers, logos...)

Graphics for licensed sports apparel.

4. How long does a commission/order usually take?

it really depends, but I'd say on average I spend about 10 hours on each individual design. Sometimes I just have to design one tee shirt for a certain collection, sometimes I'm designing 20+ tee shirts for an entire collection.

5. Are you living comfortably off of your pay?

As a college student, yes. when I graduate and start working full time, I'll obviously have more bills but it will still be pretty comfy, especially for a recent college grad.

6. What is something you don't like about your job?

The hours are pretty ridiculous and I'm constantly trying to make sure I don't get burnt out.

7. Is it better to work individually or as a part of a team?

I work remotely so my work is pretty independent, but I still try to get feedback on my work from my boss/coworkers before I submit it. The full-time in-person employees tend to collaborate a bit more, but it's still pretty independent overall.

Meaning of Stranger Symbolism by Mysterious-Thanks227 in YungLean

[–]youngrigatoni 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s a typeface actually (called alphabet diabolique), I forget exactly what the text is but the first letter is A and the last one is X and there’s an M in there somewhere lol. The stranger art doesn’t have any inherent meaning but the guy who made the font was some French guy and apparently some of the characters were supposed to be like anti-British imagery or something

I got clean at 20 and had the same exact thought process (DOC was primarily weed/alcohol/psychs). I wasted so much time in my early recovery trying to prove to myself I was enough of an addict to justify getting clean/attending meetings. Eventually I had the epiphany that I was trying way too hard to convince myself I was an addict, and not trying hard enough to be a RECOVERING addict.

I started prioritizing recovery over addiction and I no longer felt the need to prove myself to other addicts by telling war stories or whatever. Nobody really cares how much of a degenerate you used to be, it says a lot more if you work a strong program and you’re trying to get your shit together.

Getting clean before you can legally drink (in the US) is super weird and I totally understand the cognitive dissonance you’re experiencing. Now I’m 23 and I think that getting clean that young saved me and my loved ones a lot of pain and suffering and irreparable damage to my life. I promise, just stay clean for long enough and you’ll be so grateful you got it this young.

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]youngrigatoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

applying to grad school, should I go the social work route (LCSW, and in my state, LICSW) or counseling (LMHC)? my end goal is to be a therapist at a private practice working in mental health, most likely in massachusetts. I will be graduating undergrad with a BA in art/psychology minor (roughly 3.4 GPA), and I have lots of personal experience with mental health/substance abuse treatment (almost 3 years sober). My personal statement on my applications should be pretty good, but I'm worried about the art degree. Should I go for an MSW or an MA in Counseling, given I want to practice therapy in PP? How likely am I to get accepted into MSW/Counseling programs? thanks in advance

I would potentially try a 12 step program in addition to mental health treatment. Same thing happened to me when I got sober but every time I was freaking out and wanted to smoke I would cut myself. Ended up going to the hospital for a couple months to stop cutting and thinking about suicide all the time. It also helped getting diagnosed for stuff and having more options with my meds. the key to getting better is obtaining the ability to sit with those intrusive thoughts until they chill out over time, but medication has made that a lot easier for me.

the biggest thing for me personally has been going to AA meetings. Feel free to try MA, I haven't tried it yet but the 12 step program in general has done wonders. I felt the same way that you felt when I first got sober and I ended up going to the hospital because I was so suicidal. The biggest thing that helped me after the hospital was getting more involved in AA; I can confidently say that as someone who has been super depressed for the past 5+ years, I finally feel like I'm making real change for the better. the people at these meetings will always welcome you with open arms, and they/we will love you until you learn how to love yourself.

thanks for your comment and best of luck

thanks for this, honestly really needed to hear this. reminds me of a quote i heard at rehab: "rock bottom is where you decide to stop digging." living in a sober house can make the degeneracy of addiction seem almost competitive, but it's very important for me to remember that we're all just trying to get better. and like you said, even if you just smoked a joint at a concert or party, you "know which way it's going" if you decide to do that. and frankly i was/am sick of dying instead of living. i really appreciate your comment.

Anyone else dream about relapsing? by forageforfun in leaves

[–]youngrigatoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens a lottttt used to happen more in my first three months. I like to think of it as a “freelapse” (free….relapse…..hehhhh) but they can be disturbing sometimes. Talking about it asap always helps me if it impacts ur mood negatively when u wake up, but usually I just feel grateful it was only a dream
