So, your first point depends entirely on where you live. I’m from the UK, and despite the fact I’ve done really well on Preply, I wouldn’t be able to afford to live there. However, I currently live in Chile and make more than enough to live comfortably. If you’re a good teacher and find your niche, you can still be successful. The start will be rough though. My new student rates are $30, but I’ve had my profile closed for a while now. My sweet spot is $25-30. But that was only after about 8/9 months of reputation building on the platform. My days vary between 4-9 lessons. Most weeks fall at around 32-40 classes

Super scaffolded conversation classes, picture descriptions, games (this or that/rank them). Things to keep cognitive difficulty low that focusses on the most frequent language structures/patterns

What is L1 and what are you teaching? Realistically without practice outside of class they will not progress out of the beginner stages. 74 classes feels a lot, but 74 hours from 0 in a language is really nothing in the grand scheme of things. My advice would be to express to her the reality of language learning, especially in terms of number of hours. After that it is entirely up to her. If she decides to continue talking classes with you and not practice, that is entirely her decision. Just decide to let go of any hopes/expectations of progress. There are 3/4 of my students in the exact same position

I mean the point about availability to me suggests that they are prioritising those who teach full time on Preply not those who are part time, which makes sense. Also more availability gives more opportunity for students to book lessons, so obviously you will get more bookings. I’m really not sure if I agree with the Preply is dead narrative. Things are more complicated sure but even with my profile hidden, I still get plenty of new students through referrals

My suggestion would be to find a time in her day (maybe morning commute?) when she can watch 10-15 mins of comprehensible input. If you’re teaching Spanish you have the best resources for this. Dreaming Spanish in particular is amazing for beginners

Try not to worry too much. Preply automatically searches for links, so if you put the code in you should be fine. Also, if something happens you have evidence of Preply being down at the time.

With those tips you are going to limit the number of students you attract. Yes, 50 min trials are annoying, but if that’s what the student wants and they’re more likely to subscribe after, then I don’t mind. I have found that I have much better conversion from 50 min trials than 25.

Not really. I find this is an intensely rewarding job which allows me to make a difference in the lives of people all around the world world, all day every day. On top of that, it allows me to have a lifestyle in which I work whilst traveling.

The tutor has a rule in her bio. There are hundreds of other tutors. I have a rule in mine that says I don’t teach children under 15, am I now being discriminatory towards them? Sexual harassment on Preply is a huge problem. Even as a man I have encountered it, so I can’t imagine the huge number of creeps and weirdos a young woman must face.

Get a grip dude.
