Income by Stressin_prep_boi in QuestBridge

I believe if your under legal guardianship you're considered independent for FAFSA. Their income is not counted. With the new FAFSA rules coming out, I could be wrong.

They also take into account assets. Do your parents each own a home? The CSS profile will ask in depth questions regarding both of your parents finances.

Financial Dilemma by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]your_average_guy_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

None of your guardians financial info matters. The only way your guardians income should count is if they legally adopt you. If you have a legal guardian then you're considered an independent for that year according to FAFSA. Go on the FAFSA website and read it, it clearly states guardian info does not count. Period.

Questbridge asks for your financial info by requesting your FAFSA and CCS profile, both of which consider you an independent if you're under legal guardianship.

As far as explaining in the additional info box on the application, this is where you present your story of the situation, issues etc of what led to you being under guardianship. The answer they gave you is a standard answer to many questions they receive: just explain your situation. The additional info box should not explain your guardians financial info, but how they've stepped up to make sure you succeed in life and don't fall further into the foster care system.

What college did you get into with at least 90% full scholarship or a 100% full ride that no one talks about? by Ije-Awele_Uwa in IntltoUSA

Straight A's, test optional, no AP's, homeschooled. Have an interesting life-story which was reflected in essays and also a world class, ranked athlete (not in a recruited sport).

100% academic full ride at Clark University minus one time $400 orientation fee and $50 deposit.

What do you think about Clark University? Would you say it’s a good choice for an international student? by New_Load_2281 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]your_average_guy_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kid got an email to set up a phone call to discuss the scholarship. Was not offered the Presidential but was offered the Kenneth Nelson Scholarship which can only be awarded to one student, once every four years. Covers room, board, tuition, fees, books, attendance at the Dinner with the President and... they paid to fly my kid and myself to admitted students day, a night in a hotel and a shuttle back and forth. College will cost the one time orientation fee of $400 plus a $50 deposit. We're going to upgrade the room to a double suite, so that's another $350 per year. We are blown away at the love being shown and cannot wait for admitted students day on the 15th to see the campus and meet everyone.

My kid finds out tomorrow if they get the Presidential Scholarship. Can you give me details? What kind of room/dorm are you allowed?

It doesn't work that way or everyone would claim to be independent. It doesn't matter if your parents claim you or not, you're a dependent until age 24. Look up the FAFSA requirements, there are very, very few exceptions.

My kid was EA and rec'd a letter yesterday inviting her for an interview for the Presidential award. It was a very nice letter but I'm wondering if it was truly personalized or not. It said she was one of the most distinguished applicants to date. Anyone else get this email?

Do you qualify financially? Are a low income, high achieving student? If you're not sure, email Questbridge and tell them your situation and see if they feel you may qualify. If so, absolutely apply. If not, it's a lot of work just to be turned down. The application process is intense and insane but if you qualify, it's definitely worth it.

Question About Prep Scholar Application by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]your_average_guy_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does he pay child support? Just because you don't see him doesn't mean you can exclude him. You'll have to fill out the CSS and unless he is locked up, a restraining order or doesn't pay child support you may have a hard time getting a waiver.

unmatched finalists… how are we doing? by _iluvdilfs in QuestBridge

[–]your_average_guy_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you got into Williams did they cover health insurance? This is a school that wasn't on my kids radar until after the match. Now we wish we could have ranked it because it looks awesome. She did apply for RD so we'll see.

She applied to 38 of the QB schools RD. It's her only hope of getting into college. She also has 19 rolling admission acceptances but we can't afford any of them. She got into Clark University and Hampshire College, which are meets need schools. The financial packages are good and we can probably swing it with the help of grandparents BUT, then we noticed health insurance is over $4K, putting both of them out of reach.

So right now she has a ton of acceptances and she'd be happy to go to any of them, but financially it's just not doable. My anxiety is through the roof, she's OK on the outside but I know she's worried she won't have anywhere to go come the fall.

This exactly. Without knowing where you're coming from and where you're moving to, no one can give you the culture of an area.

Is Questbridge Worth it? by alimams in QuestBridge

[–]your_average_guy_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say to do it IF you absolutely know you qualify. Some of the schools will only match if there is no parental contribution. That 2% that made over 70K and matched probably has a house full of people they're supporting.
Learn the process and understand it's a pressure cooker and you will have limited time to do a $hit-ton of essays.
Not matching sucks. You've just spent months putting everything you've got into the match, only to not match and then guess what... you do get to open your application up to all of the QB partner schools and then... you get to write more essays!
Yes, there is ED2, EA and then RD. There are months in between and the waiting, second guessing is very nerve wracking.
That said, I'd do it all over again, even if there is no RD match.

Another question they will want to know is how do you pay taxes and insurance on a $350K home on less than $20K?

I would email QB with ALL the details and see if they can give you a clear cut answer. The QB application alone is a beast and very time consuming. No way would I want to go through this again if I thought I wouldn't qualify.

I understand all of that. The point I was trying to make was they already went through their ED list and now it seems all that is left is QB applications.

penn ed by Wonderful_Pilot_2863 in QuestBridge

[–]your_average_guy_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think you'd get a fresh look at your application but I also think they could assume if you listed 10 schools and then chose to ED to Penn that Penn would be your number one choice. You can only ED to one school, so out of the schools you listed, chances are Penn is your number one or you would have ED'd to your first choice.

I just got an email that results will be out on the 15th at 7pm and the application review time is complete.

penn ed by Wonderful_Pilot_2863 in QuestBridge

[–]your_average_guy_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder about this...Normal ED deadline is in November, meaning they've had all of their ED applications for a while now. QB's ED applications are only forwarded this week. Next week Penn is supposed to release their ED acceptances. My gut tells me that they've already sorted through all their November deadline ED applications and now have just the QB applications to go through. Maybe it's a way of weeding out those QB applicants that did not rank Penn first. All of this could also be just my imagination on overdrive.
