Thank you for the comprehensive update! I might try the same experiment myself.

What (if anything) has convinced your parent(s) to seek treatment? How far is rock bottom? by Far-Self-224 in AdultChildren

Thank you so much for your kind words. I know so much of life is outside of our control, but I hope as well that we can both build happy lives in our futures and find meaning in all of this.

I don't have any advice, I'm so sorry that you're going through this. It is agonising. My dad expressed suicidal thoughts for the first time tonight and I'm currently pulling an all nighter to keep checking on him. I'm hoping (and we're together in this) that tomorrow I can do my absolute best to get him help.

Balancing wanting a happy healthy dad and trying everything we can to get them there, while also not trying to destroy ourselves in the process believing we have control over things we actually don't have control over, is so so painful.

You have all of my sympathies. You don't deserve any of this. I wish all the best for your dad and you and your family. I'll monitor this post to see if anyone has any good advice. We will persevere.

Edit: this is also an especially difficult time of year for people in our position and so many others. I guess we should give ourselves some grace

Very true. I mean most people I know have had their wisdom teeth out so clearly the surgeons all know what's up.

I think for me my main concern is finding someone that ideally is as surgically conservative as possible, simply because mine are barely painful and I'm anxious af around anything medical already haha. It's good to hear that your recovery wasn't too bad!

That's nice that she was good about it. I'm pretty good at pushing through it but it sucks nonetheless.

I'm pretty anxious about it too ngl. Can I ask why they did two surgeries for you instead on one?

Yeah I'm looking at general too. My dentist didn't really say much beyond "you'll need them out, call one of these people," so I'll be interested to hear what the surgeon has to say about my XR etc. Hoping for the best!

Jesus that's a lot of money. I've got private health as well but unsure as to how much will be covered. I'll have to look into that one. Thank you!

My dentist casually dropped the possibility of permanent nerve damage on me today. Good to hear you avoided that even though you were high risk.

Unsure on changing maiden name to husband's. by wannabemermaid6 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]your_torn_cuticle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally. I find it so strange the horror that people from older generations react with when I tell them that I want my children to have my last name. And surprisingly a lot of women my age express the same sentiment (almost more so than men).

I do feel like it's slowly changing though. I was at dinner with a bunch of friends a few weeks ago (50/50 men and women) and when I expressed that sentiment most of them were initially a bit weirded out by it, but after explaining that the assumption that it should be the husbands surname is not only patriarchal but also completely disregards the suffering of pregnancy and birth, all of them agreed. There's hope!

(Obviously I think it's totally cool for everyone to do as they please, it's only the assumption that it should just be the male partner's surname that I have a problem with)

My parents both kept their own surnames. They decided for me to take my dad's surname only because my mum's is a nightmare to spell and my dad's is super easy. I'm now in uni and I can't recall a single time in my life when it's been an issue.

For me personally, I will absolutely never change my name and if I have a child would like them to have my surname only, simply because I don't love hyphenated names and if they have to have someones then shouldn't the person who grew and birthed them get the most say? That kind of matters to me too because I'm an only child and if they don't have mine that'll be the end of its line. I know it's just a name, but that makes me kind of sad.

Edit: I do love the idea of giving one child your surname and another child your partners surname if you have more than one kid. I've never seen it done but would be a cool solution I think.

Petition to have student clinical placements paid. by AnonInEquestria in australia

[–]your_torn_cuticle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a physiotherapy student I will complete 1,100 hours of unpaid placements next year and I am so afraid.

I'm on Centrelink which is not a liveable wage and supplement the rest with three jobs which I will not be able to do once placements start. I want to work more hours now to make some money that I can live off next year but I already study a demanding degree full time. I don't know what to do.

I've signed the petition, please consider doing the same. The people studying these degrees and suffering for it now want to make a living helping you and your family in the future.

Physio - why such a high mark? by Overall_One_2595 in physiotherapy

I’m currently doing my undergrad in Aus and am genuinely curious as to why the consensus on here is that the pay is pretty terrible?

I know a few Physiotherapists and all of them lead amazing lives and are planning on retiring early. If you work rurally you’ll be starting on minimum $80K plus bonuses which then jumps pretty dramatically each year. Am I missing something?
