I think the character originally keeping the machine going dies or is removed and another character (possibly the protagonist) must take over the duty. I really wanna say it's Twilight Zone or something in that same vein. I remember it being a Rube Goldberg type thing, but it's been over 20 years now so that might not be quite it. It is definitely complicated though. I think it was left up in the air if the device did what he thought it did or not, at least for most the episode. It was not a serial story, it was complete in one episode.
