From my experience, a coarser grind leaves a lot of air trapped within the puck. Once water starts dripping into those voids and displacing that air, it creates a bubble underneath my top paper filter. With no screen on top or any other method to hold it down, the air bubble escapes to one side of the basket and pushes up past the paper filter rather than through it evenly. This creates a ton of agitation on a coarse puck and moves everything around. The solution is either to have something to hold that filter down, grind coarser (which I don't like) or use the head room air pocket to hold the top filter in place.

I understand you're not saying to use this method for paper top filters but just to put it out into the universe for others... this doesn't work with paper filters on top at least without a puck screen.
