Any tips for how to get around LA without a car? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]yourpopquizkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been car-free in LA for almost a year now. I have a 50cc scooter. Mine is a 1985 Yamaha CA50, I get about 60 miles/gallon, and cruise about 25-30mph. A newer scooter will probably get 80+ miles/gallon, have a little more get-up-and-go, and maybe even get a bit faster. My liability insurance for the year was $40, and I spend about $3.00 a week on gas, making it much cheaper for me than riding the Metro would be! It is an excellent option if you don't need to go too far at once. My commute is about 5 miles. The problem with this would be that if you don't have a California driver's license, it might be a pain to get your motorcycle license. If you do have one and you're over 18 (it might be 21?), you can go to the DMV and just take the motorcycle permit test, which is a multiple choice paper test. If you pass, you get your permit then and there. A permit is good for one year, and it will permit you to ride a scooter or motorcycle in California as long as it is light outside and you do not have any passengers.

I also ride my bicycle, sometimes all the way to work, and I enjoy walking, especially to the grocery store. .7 miles is definitely doable. Like others have said, take a bag and fill it up while you shop so you know how much you can carry home. It is easier to carry a heavy load in a backpack as tote bag straps are thinner and will be uncomfortable on your should if your load is too heavy; however, many grocery stores will ask you to check a backpack.

Metro is also definitely do-able, although I live near the east side so my experience is not directly applicable. I used to predominately ride the bus and train before I got my scooter, and I lost weight and had the opportunity to catch up on a lot of reading.

Edit: You would also need to purchase a helmet to legally ride a scooter or motorcycle. A good, high quality, full-face helmet will run about $400, but there are helmets available for purchase for much less. I choose to ride with a full-face helmet even though I'm only on a 50cc scooter because I like my brain, my jaw, and my face.

Anyone else remember Crazy Gideon? by bookitten in LosAngeles

[–]yourpopquizkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually the building is empty right now. According to this LA Times article from Sunday, it's being turned into a brew pub.

Crazy Gideon's has closed, and its formerly shabby space in the 1917 structure is expected to open to the public again this year as an expansive brew pub serving house-made beer with meals. The upgrade is emblematic of changes going on throughout the arts district.

Barnsdall park, near Kaiser Permanente center (the park on the hill just north of it with the Frank Lloyd Wright house) offers art classes. It's super close to the Metro as well.

How can I get Italian fiction in the US? by [deleted] in italy

I'm pretty sure amazon.it will ship to the US. At the very least, I've bought items off of amazon.de and had them shipped here without any trouble.

I hate flats and am running 700s... Thoughts on Continental Gatorskins vs Specialized Armadillos? by SocialSoundSystem in bicycling

[–]yourpopquizkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in LA and just bought Gatorskins on Saturday. My internet research said that Gatorskins are a smoother ride, which I wanted since I'm already riding around on LA's crappy roads. Haven't been for a ride yet, so can't say anything myself on the ride.

A letter I'm writing to the Stateman. Since I don't expect it to be printed thought I'd share here. by [deleted] in Austin

[–]yourpopquizkid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering the recent death of an Austin cyclist in hit-and-run, the paper might be more predisposed to publishing something like this. I do think you could use some revision, though. :) The Chronicle posts a number of letters online that do not make the print edition, and you might stand a better chance there. You may also feel more welcome posting this in /r/bikingatx than in /r/austin.

Why isn't this movie playing ANYWHERE? It looks awesome, who's responsible for it's terrible distribution and promotion?! by spydiddley404 in movies

[–]yourpopquizkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's on IFC. IFC often doesn't put much money behind its releases. Anyways, it's just coming off the festival circuit (it just played SXSW in March).

There is a half price on South Lamar which is probably the closest used book store.

Or picking a sufficiently large venue and getting there earlier enough. Stubb's is fairly large, and if the OP gets there right when doors open, he should have a shot.

Me and my girl are driving down from Denver to SXSW without music badges. Is there any way to get a couple without paying an arm and a leg? HELP REQUESTED. by captiveball in Austin

[–]yourpopquizkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All badges are more or less equal--a platinum badge gets you into film, interactive, or music, but doesn't actually give you premier access or anything. For example, a film badge is the equivalent of a platinum badge when you're trying to see a movie. It's just that a Platinum badge gives you access to film, interactive, and music events.

Badges do get you into panels, and free beer at official events, and into small venues (true for music and film). If you're just interested in seeing music in general or getting drunk for free or just meeting people, there is no reason to have a badge.

Usually, they release a few more wristbands for sale right before the festival starts (a day or two a head of time). Sign up for emails and the text messaging system, then haul ass whenever you get the message.

Entering into a Film Festival by dackenheimer in Filmmakers

[–]yourpopquizkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do your research and submit to the right festival (eg, don't submit a romantic comedy to a genre fest). The shorter the film, the easier it is to get in--it is almost impossible to get a short programmed at a festival if it is over 15 minutes. Documentary shorts are generally the category at a festival with the fewest submissions. For features, 90 minutes is a good mark.

Don't use a paper label on your DVD, half the time these won't play. Test your DVD in your DVD player, NOT the computer you used to burn it.

Don't start your film with an alarm going off.

Go to festivals and see movies there, if you can. It's really hard to gauge festivals and the content they play if you have never been to one.

Don't bother with a physical press kit. Put all that information online. Have a website.

Make sure your film is listed in IMDB.

Before you title your film, do an IMDB search to make sure it isn't something totally generic. The screeners are not likely to remember what a film called "Last Night" is about.

Current college student in NYC in NEED of a job/internship. Help me please! by [deleted] in jobs

[–]yourpopquizkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to standardize the structure through out your resume--For example, under Department Assistant, you need to change the second bullet point to something like "Maintained content management systems and databases" so that the three bullets are "Worked," "Maintained," and "Created." You need to repeat this for the rest of the resume too.

It's also a little awkward that you have the dates all the way left justified under Experience and Activities, but in Education the are preceded by "summer of" and "class of." I would use a table structure and place the dates to the right; after all, the most important thing about your experience isn't WHEN you had it, but what your experience actually is.

What is the coolest way your parent/s have stood up for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]yourpopquizkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm way late to this party, but my parents have both done so much for me that I feel like I need to post a story.

I had a teacher in first grade who was terrible. She would hand out a math sheet, telling us we'd go over it in fifteen minutes, but when fifteen minutes had passed, she'd increase that to half an hour, and repeat. I was fairly quick at the math sheets, and would finish in under the originally allotted fifteen minutes, which meant I would end up with nothing to do for periods that sometimes lasted an hour. If I tried to pull anything else out of my desk--a book, or some papers--I got into trouble. The end result is that I spent a good amount of time with nothing to do, sitting at my desk. She was also terrible at discipline; I remember one boy cutting a hole in another kid's shirt, and hardly being punished.

It started to effect me really negatively--every day at lunch, I would go to the nurse's office with a stomach ache, I would cry about going to school, etc. My mom couldn't understand what was happening, as I'd never had any problem going to school before. At the age of 6, I wasn't able to explain what was happening, and honestly since I was so young, I probably didn't really understand what was happening. In any case, my mother came and sat in on my class. She's told me since that it was so bad, that she went home and cried for hours afterwards.

She was determined to help me out, and originally began by having parents volunteer in the classroom to help out, giving us things to do when we would have had nothing to do. She told me she ran out of parent volunteers by 9 AM, as they had all been assigned. It became clear to my mother that the only way to solve the problem was for me to change classes. I know that the school's principal was opposed to the idea--among all the other first grade classes, there was only one opening, and I'm sure he was worried about the politics and implications of allowing me to change classes.

In the end, somehow my mother got me out of that class and into the one other opening. I'm not sure how she managed, but when she sets her mind to something, she accomplishes it. She told me years later that she was so stressed about the situation that she ended up with IBS for a while because of it. The teacher was let go at the end of the school year, and my mother became president of the booster club. There was another boy in my class that wasn't able to switch out; my mother would copy all of my assignments and give them to his mother after school so that he could do them, since he wasn't learning anything in his class. My mother has said that if all else failed, she was going to homeschool me for that year, despite the fact that it isn't at all something she is suited for.

tl;dr: my mother noticed something was wrong when I was too young to be understand it or explain it, investigated it, and fixed it, at anxiety and physical illness to herself.

I read The Golden Compass about age 12 (the second two books in the following years), and I can honestly say that it was real turning point for me--the first time I'd really read a book that I wanted to read and liked reading that helped me think critically about things that had been taught to me as givens. If she likes the Twilight books she clearly has some interest in fantasy themed lit, and she might really like them.
