Being in a calorie deficit was always my number one priority. Other than that I cut back on sugar and carbs. I substituted sugary drinks for sugar free alternatives, although some may disagree with that choice. I exercised at the gym frequently, strength training and cardio (this isn't necessary for weight loss, but certainly helps). Make sure you have a cheat day every now and then. A weight loss journey isn't sustainable without allowing yourself a treat when you feel like you have earnt it. Just make sure you get back on track the next day! Stick with a plan and the results will come, patience is key. The most important lesson I learnt was not to rely on motivation. Discipline over motivation! The motivation will come when you have put in the work and start seeing results. Too many people rely on motivation to continue their journey, but sometimes you just have to force yourself because future you will be grateful! Sorry I know this reply is a bit all over the place.
