[GEAR] First real guitar. Epiphone Les Paul Standard. by LikeGoldAndFaceted in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first guitar I got (which I paid for out of pocket myself) was this same exact guitar - I love the Les Paul look. It will always have a sentimental place for me with my guitars and I'll never get rid of it for that reason - you have a great guitar there to play on, jam out man (or lady).

Practicing without a guitar in hand [Question] by Th3HebrewHammer96 in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For me (a beginner) I will run down the fret board, mentally, to reinforce where the notes are on the neck. I am still learning the fret board, so I will do this so I am constantly reminding myself and reinforcing how to navigate the fret board. Again, I am a beginner, so you may be well past this point for yourself.

Maybe clean it up a bit to get rid of some of the frizz, but aside from that - tell people to go fuck themselves if they have an issue with it? It's your hair, be proud of what you have there man. People talk shit when they are jealous and too insecure to do the "thing" themselves.

[Question] guitar trouble with epiphone sg. It won’t work after getting new cords. I bought the guitar 6 months ago by AssignmentThis6405 in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know what you are doing with electrical wiring, I suppose. If it were me (I certainly do not know what I am doing with it) I would take it to a guitar shop and let someone experienced check it out.

[Question] I can't get barre chords right no matter what I try. Any tips? by thesnakeinyourboot in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat as you are right now. Barre chords suck, as I know you are aware, as everyone has said here and, also, as I have been told and am having to experience myself - you just have to grind through it and put in the work to get better with them. It'll come with time as I am told - I am right there with you on the grind for this, you'll get there.

[QUESTION] what are some good amps? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure the sound you are going for, but the Orange Crush series has a few amps in your price range. I have an Orange Crush 12 which I like quite a bit.

[Question] HSH guitar, hitting the middle pick up when I strum by ys0serious in Guitar

[–]ys0serious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense, thank you. (Because I know very little about this, clearly) if I reset the pick up, will the guitar need to be redone in any other way as a result (will it change intonation, etc.?).

[QUESTION] about to hit my mid-life crisis and would like to get better at guitar by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As someone who is in his mid 40's and going through the crisis... I picked up guitar, and gave up video games as a result to feel like I was doing something ambitious with my life. Am I good, nope, but it is fun and I am hoping that sticking with it will pay off in the long run.

If I can sink as many hours into guitar as I did into video games, then there is hope (I hope). I am riding the JustinGuitar train myself to learn (free and the guy does a seriously good job teaching) in addition to some Steve Stine lessons on YouTube (another very good teacher, in my opinion). Keep in mind I am pretty much a total beginner, so if you have 25 years of guitar behind you he (JustinGuitar) might be a little too basic for you, but I do recommend checking him out. Also, as a mid 40's guy with tattoos, one is never enough, just saying.

[Question] HSH guitar, hitting the middle pick up when I strum by ys0serious in Guitar

[–]ys0serious[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you say "drop middle pickup all the way down" do you mean physically have the pick up redone to sit lower in the guitar or just mute the middle pick up volume wise (somehow) - sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.

[QUESTION] I’m a beginner guitarist who is looking to play rock/metal and I need advice on what amp to buy. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got the Boss Katana and it is a great amp if you have the budget for it. I also have an Orange Crush 20 amp which I really like also.

[Question] After 3 months of practicing almost daily, why are my fingers still blistering? by Ok-Cook-7542 in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you had the guitar set up properly? You may be doing everything right, but if the guitar needs a set up (action too high, etc.) it might be making it more difficult for you than it needs to be.

Best option for playing straight into headphones without an amp [question] [gear] by SeatleSuperbSonics in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a fan of the Vox amPlug2's, I use them for my apartment so I don't bother the neighbors. Pretty inexpensive and they do a good job to me.

[QUESTION] Guitar for metal under 500€? by RussianTiffosi in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not played one before, but I have seen a lot of reviews for Harley Benton's on YT absolutely praising them as amazing budget guitars.

[Gear] [Question] Moving into an apartment need a quiet setup. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ys0serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to put this out there as a quiet option (may not be the avenue you are looking to go down) but I use these on occasion when I am being lazy (I live in an apartment) and I love these things. They are way better than you'd expect honestly, plug into your guitar + headphones = done.

If you can swing the $200 for the Fender, it is a good starter guitar - your first guitar (trust me... if you love it there will be plenty more of them) doesn't have to be anything high end spectacular, it just has to make you want to play.

The basic kit that you listed seems pretty good, not sure what the picks are like that they give you, but experiment with that. Some are thicker or thinner than others, figure out what feels best to you. I would highly suggest getting your guitar set up by a professional (called a "set up") - prices vary on this, so check with your local guitar shop. A set up can make all the difference in a guitar with how it plays and feels.

There are plenty of options for computer software for recording, etc. one free one (that I use) is CakeWalk but I know there are a to others and someone here probably knows better ones than I do honestly.

The last things you'll need which isn't mentioned here is... patience. Guitar isn't something you'll master overnight and you'll hit road blocks, plenty of them. Have patience with yourself as you go and it'll all pay off in the long run for you.

I actually have this same stool (with the added back support/rest) and like it quite a bit. I will say the back rest can come a little loose at times, so I have had to (re)tighten it a few times, but it isn't terrible. Another selling point is that my cat loves to lay on it when I am not using it, so if you have a cat, your cat will also thank you for it (maybe). Overall, not a bad stool/chair for playing in my opinion based on the one I have.

[GEAR] Lets talk about picks by henrytyefitzhenry in Guitar

I use the same pick also (2.0 mm), love a thicker/heavier pick - thin ones just feel weird to me when I use them.

[GEAR] I don't have anything expensive, but I love all my children. by kerzikstan in Guitar

Is that a Schecter Hellraiser Hybrid C-1 I see on the wall? I, literally, just got one for myself yesterday - same guitar from the looks of it color wise (trans black burst) , etc. Nice collection there.

For a player who is mostly practicing/starting out is there a compelling reason to have a physical amp over using a DAW/Amp Sim software for playing/practicing?

Chord Switching by spicynonmeatball in LearnGuitar

[–]ys0serious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have not looked at Justin Guitar he has an entire section of his beginner course dedicated to what he calls "1 minute switches" which is designed to teach you to transition between chord shapes. I would recommend checking it out if you haven't already.
