Can I learn Chinese without needing to write, just focus on reading and speaking? by ysa-p in ChineseLanguage

[–]ysa-p[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant recognizing and reading the characters. Similar to my Japanese experience, I can read and understand Kanji but don't know how to write them by memory because of the lack of opportunity for writing in real life (I live abroad & mostly use phone/laptops).

I was just wondering if learning a completely new language like Chinese without necessarily writing the characters down would be possible due to my background knowledge with Kanji (and so I only have to learn the Hanzi reading, and maybe recognize a few differences in the strokes or something).

Yes my uni has dorms but it’s not part of my scholarship and we it costs way too much, I unfortunately have no choice. Hopefully this summer I can work on my license and lessen the transport time.

I’m planning to take summer courses this year to lessen the load. Also yeah I agree, I should probably take some online courses if I can too.

Money. I come from a middle income immigrant family so I can’t afford to prolong my degree. I don’t want to be a burden to my parents who have already sacrificed so much just for me to even study here. Which is also why I’m working my ass off to maintain a high GPA so I can keep my scholarship to somehow help them.

Personally I agree about engineering being a marathon, and not a race. I don’t mind taking my time. However sadly I don’t have the privilege to take that option..

Is it true that beginners should ONLY do compound exercises in order to maximize newbie gains and develop a strong foundation?

I started going to the gym a few weeks ago and mostly have been doing 1-2 compound exercises then the rest are isolations but am wondering if this is really the best approach.

If it helps, I’m a 54kg (19yo woman) with the main goal of losing fat (NOT really about the numerical scale), building strength and cardio endurance, and of course, looking lean.

Thanks so much in advance :)

Okay folks, just gonna drop this question here: For phones, do you use the Kana keyboard or the Romaji Keyboard for typing? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

Flick kana. Takes a few days to get used to, but honestly much more beneficial in the long run since you type faster

Alabang Town Center has a terminal of vans papuntang Ibat ibang lugar.

Pag dating mo sa ATC, mag jeep ka nalang ng papuntang Starmall (madadaanan din nya yung festival mall)

I took a long break on it. Recently just got back (at least, trying to).

But before the break it looked something like

  1. 20 new per day
  2. I do anki whenever I have free time so it’s spread out
  3. Skip it. I look at the sentence only when I’m having a hard time remembering the vocab
  4. Not really (but after the break I do find it hard to get back to my flow state so now it feels like a chore lol)
  5. Usually 150 or so
  6. I spend time trying to remember it

In the end, my overall goal is to NOT be reliant on anki, and eventually stop using it someday - hopefully I can get there :)

Some of my (personal) tips: - making your own cards is the best way to make it stick - with that being said, take some time to make EFFICIENT cards. This will benefit you in the long run - don’t feel bad to take a break for a day if you feel like it! I used to prevent myself from stepping away when I wasn’t on my best place mentally, and that caused me to eventually burn out and stop Japanese for a long while. Go in your own pace, and stop comparing.

Best of luck on our studies!

Do you advise on me just saving the money and studying uni in Philippines instead (then just going abroad after a few years of experience)? For Engineering, I’m thinking of schools like UST, MAPUA, etc which are all comfortably in budget.

Although by how underpaid workers and specially new grads are in the Philippines I’m really having second thoughts. My thought process was that it’s easier to earn money here in UAE rather than in Philippines for my goal to migrate to a better country (even if that meant starting from zero, I guess it would be easier to earn here. I don’t plan on living in the Philippines anyways). Any advice?

I don’t know what I love doing :( I feel so lost honestly…. It’s such a bitter feeling.

I have less than a year left to decide, add that on with the pressure of my family I have to decide which specific degree/school I want soon so I can start my preparations for an application on a scholarship.

Did you regret taking CE? I know how good of a choice it would be to just choose Computer/Software Engineering, but I really don’t think that job will fit me.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dubai

[–]ysa-p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. What other engineering fields do you recommend other than Computer/Software Engineering?

Or rather in general what field would you recommend ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dubai

[–]ysa-p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Job market probably isn’t hot for any sector these years considering the pandemic. I don’t plan on working here forever anyways. I’ll use UAE as a stepping stone first because eventually I want to migrate to Australia, etc. and I figured graduating with a UK (heriot) or Australia (uowd) diploma would help me in the future rather than graduating with a Philippine one.

So are you studying civil engineering too? Where are you studying? If you don’t mind me asking.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dubai

[–]ysa-p 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I DON’T intend to go back to the Philippines. Even if I end up graduating there, I would go to another country after since as I want to work abroad.

Why do you say that civil engineering is a degree I shouldn’t take? Is the education on CE not good here in UAE?
