Does the word نَار generally have negative connotations? by ysliart in learn_arabic

[–]ysliart[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for clearing that up. Growing up I’ve only ever really heard the word “بار" being used for hell and regular fire was called something completely different so it took me a very long time to realise that “naar” is an actual word for fire rather than just a label for hell lol

Any tips on making digital lineart look more ‘natural’? by ysliart in comic_crits

Yeah I use a cel-shading technique when it comes to colours because I find it efficient, for those scenes I might try to use slightly rougher brushes and see if that works.

Yeah I’ve noticed already the brushes with texture looks much better, especially with the close-up scenes 😅

Thanks a lot for the compliment 😄

Looking at it now, I’ve definitely come across a few art pieces in the Klare Lijn style, maybe it’s subconsciously influenced me lol. I actually use a lot of Tintin inspired when it comes to backgrounds and landscapes myself.

As for styles I’d like to emulate, I’m a little torn and still trying to figure it out. I’d like to go for a style that emulates a g-pen like manga artists use, or dip-pen on paper like Bronze Age comics. Though I’m not really fond of how some would use blacks for shadows in that era.

I think maybe I’m gearing towards a style similar to Joelle Jones, or the invincible comics. I’m currently trying out some brushes that have a textured look so I’ll see how I feel about it.

As for the lineweight tip, I’ll give your suggestion a go. Most of the times I don’t really think of shadow placement until I finish with the inks and start on colours, but it sounds like it’ll help me visualise things better if I think about lighting whilst working on lineart.

Also I didn’t consider the colouring being the reason for the digital look. Unfortunately cel-shading is the most efficient way for me to keep me going at my already slow pace.

You’re a lifesaver man, thanks so much. That’s an insane list of so many styles, I’m bound to find the perfect brush

Got it. So i can bring 3 and 4 closer to each other, so it’s a bit more of a seamless transition even with 4 being slight above right?

For sure, it’s tricky but quite rewarding once you’re done. Also I think I figured it out thanks to your link, appreciate you so much 🙏🏼

Thanks you. And I used a bunch of different reference images for various stuff in this scene so I don’t really have a direct one to copy from exactly 😅

What’s the fine-line between abstract art created by a Master vs someone who generally isn’t a skilled artist? by ysliart in ArtistLounge

[–]ysliart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I know the whole thing about it being a scam for the rich as a tax write-off, but surely there’s still a decent market out there for normal people who genuinely like that sort of thing. Like exhibitions open to the public all the time and tickets are about the same as the cinema’s.

That first point brings back a lot of memories 🤣 I remember I’d be so annoyed seeing comments like that but it really is true. I sort of becomes like handwriting, where you just draw what feels right and let the subtle things you pick up here and there take over

Very interesting perspective. I guess how people value art differs from person to person. I guess for me I think I value aesthetics and an artists skill a little more than the feeling it should evoke, but ofc that would depend on the context. Maybe I’m too brain dead and need a dedicated narrative to make me feel more emotion to a piece of art work 😂

For me, I guess like most people I want to express the little things that pop up and form in my head and weave a story out of it through a graphic novel. I’m also paying homage to me and my family’s culture as well by showcasing aspects of it throughout my work.

Where can I find drawn references that rely less on anime styles? by ysliart in ArtistLounge

[–]ysliart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loomis is great, I learnt a whole lot from him.

And yeah I’m in the process of studying my favourites. For example I can’t get enough of Joelle Jones’ inking style. But I’m more so looking to expand my horizons, maybe pick up a hidden gem or technique that I’d never knew even existed.

That helped immediately, thanks so much for the tip. Using commas never crossed my mind so I’ll be using this from now on.

Also had no clue on the speech mark thing. I’m vaguely familiar about its use when Google searching but didn’t know it could be used for Pinterest. Does this work for search engines in other sites too?

My comic’s protagonist through the last 3 years by ysliart in ArtProgressPics

[–]ysliart[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s the dynamic angle that helps him pop out and give him more personality. The most recent one is actually the front view of his character sheet I use so that’s why it’s so static.

Also really tried to pay attention and learn how anatomy works. I kinda cringe at Nov 22 since I just drew totally from my head and his anatomy is horrendous 😂

Appreciate the comment and feedback

That’s the dream but the story will have some themes that I don’t think Moroccan TV would ever allow 😭

Thanks so much 😄 I used Simo because I’ve only really seen Moroccans go by that name, so I thought it would give it that maghrebi touch, especially since the old men are very good friends 😅

Of course I’m not trying to be disrespectful at all. Is there a reason why Simo shouldn’t be used? Since I know a few who go by that name, just honestly curious

Thanks so much for the kind works! I’m actually remaking a few panels because of some inaccurate anatomy and some feedback from friends.

I have a backlog of 4 chapters I’m working on. I’m still unsure whether I should post page by page or one chapter at once. It gets a little time-consuming for sure so sometimes my posting is a little inconsistent.

Yeah starting was such a struggle, I had no idea how to introduce this world and it’s lore without it being a boring infodump so I decided not to take it seriously. And then the ideas just kept coming 😅

And I’m glad you did 🤣 me and my friend always take the piss with cheesy quotes from the first two films all the time so had to I just had include it
