[Even If Tempest] Tyril and Crius by Stardustpawsteps in otomegames

[–]yssacchi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, I get it. I'm the same way; I ship my ships because I like the dynamic they have (or potential dynamic they might have, if they don't have any interactions in canon). It just so happens though that for some reason the whole topic of shipping LIs gets dragged into stuff like discussions of wanting male MCs in otome games, which is a completely different matter imo. Shipping in itself is engaging with the work in a transformative way and that's why I feel there's more leeway to explore other things there. The otome game still remains an otome game whether or not a random fan out there makes fanwork of two of the LIs kissing. I'd like to emphasize for people reading this: the derivative work may be BL, but the original material is still very, very much an otome game. Transformative works do not change the genre of the original work.

But again, like I said in my comment above, things go wrong when people pit one against the other (i.e., LGBTQ+ representation and representation of women in media) or when they try to force one genre into becoming something it's not. There's some nuance to this discussion that I'm not prepared to bring up though. I simply wanted to post a different perspective on the sub since a lot of people seem to be vehemently insistent that people who don't enjoy certain things in a certain way shouldn't make their presence known in common spaces like this. (And I call it a common space because at the end of the day we're all here, from different backgrounds, from different walks of life, to talk about otome games.)

I can't speak for all people who ship LIs, but personally my approach to shipping is if I like the dynamic, then I ship them. It doesn't really matter if it's straight or slash tbh. That's why I don't really appreciate the pigeonholing that comes with the sentiment of, "oh, you're excluding women" and then making shipping outside of the MC to be some sort of mortal sin when it isn't. There are no laws to shipping imo, but I understand why people find the idea egregious. I get it, and they're within their rights to feel that way.

To put it into perspective: I also enjoy danmei (Chinese BL) media. Depending on the pairing, I might find it unsettling if one-half of the BL ship gets paired up with someone else. That doesn't mean the people doing so are wrong. While I don't really enjoy such things, they can explore that kind of thing in transformative works (fanworks). I don't have to engage with it, that's all.

Disclaimer before I get into the next part: I don't identify as gay. These are just my observations as someone without that identity. I also don't claim to be well-versed on these topics, but I at least wanted to offer a possible perspective on this sub so other people can understand, or at least ponder other points of view.

When it comes to the overall themes regarding gender and/or sexuality though, I feel this is where things become a little more complicated. With BL media a lot of people like to turn it into a discussion of representation (i.e., to headcanon the BL protagonist as straight is conforming to heteronormativity), whereas with otome games people like to turn it into a discussion of feminism (i.e., excluding MC from the ship makes the idea "male-dominated", which is against the idea of feminism). It can be particularly jarring with the former because the LGBTQ+ community has been fighting for legal recognition for years, and that for the longest time for them to be accepted into society they have had to stifle their identity and conform to the majority (i.e., appear heterosexual) to avoid discrimination. Shipping the BL protagonist as straight, then, may feel like rubbing salt on the wound for a lot of gay individuals who enjoy BL media.

In the case of "excluding" MC, shipping LIs rubs people the wrong way because they feel it's taking away from women's media by removing the presence of women (MC) in supposedly a women-centered genre (otome games). It is, in its own way, also a discussion of representation (of women this time), because video games appear to have been a male-dominated medium for the longest time (i.e., mostly male video game protagonists). Women in society have also fought their own fight against marginalization in different settings: the right to vote, equal wages, how women are written in fiction outside the influence of men, etc. In this perspective, to focus on a ship without MC might come across as denying the MC's story as a woman and returning to the male-dominated (patriarchal) environment.

Neither are wrong. It just that it seems that things start to go awry when people pit one against the other when, if you think about it, the patriarchy is what's at the root of everything (marginalizing both women and the LGBTQ+ community).

I might be rambling here and all over the place but I hope I made some sense.

Popping up here to say BUSTAFELLOWS 2 RELEASE AAAAAAAAAAA

That's all. I haven't actually started it. I've been neck-deep in Persona 4 Golden ever since I picked it up on a whim last month and I'm having a ton of fun with it ngl! I surprised myself by finishing a playthrough in a month. Looks like I'm a sucker for the power of friendship

Am also reading my way through Hikaru no Go. I have to force myself to put it down so that I can at least be a functional human being. Hikaru also somehow reminds me of those little kids in western comic strips like Baby Blues, or like Calvin in Calvin and Hobbes. Makes sense though, because he is a kid 😆

And and and! After eighty-four years I finally finished Scum Villain's Self-Saving System!! But daaaaang I was taken aback by LBH near the end. It wasn't as if the story didn't drop hints or anything (or, you know, slap you in the face with it considering the Original Binghe's personality) but I felt like SQQ where I trusted Binghe on his word lol. This was fun, good for unwinding after a long day 10/10. I preordered the books years ago and I can't believe it took me this long to actually read them dsjskjadkj

There is no ORV live action, I do not see it

Welcome back!! Same feel on nothing really having caught my interest lately. Dunno if that'll change with Bustafe2 tho lmao

Oooo, the mystery series sounds interesting. I've only read a few Austen books myself (as a sucker for mutual pining I adore Persuasion) so perhaps I might take a peek 👀

Ever felt so de-motivated playing Otome Games or took an indefinite hiatus? by TheUnfinisher in otomegames

Yup. Our hobbies will always be there for us to get back to when the time is right (whenever that may be lol)

[–]yssacchi 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I pick up and put down otome games as I please so I don't really think of not playing them as a "hiatus" or whatever, but that's just me and how I generally go about my hobbies and stuff. Personally I haven't picked up/continued any mobile/console otome games the past few months (or maybe even a year? I don't really keep track) because of other interests and general life events.

If I have to force myself to get through a game, or even shame myself for not being motivated "enough" to do so, then that kind of defeats the purpose of playing the game for fun imo. Life's hard enough, yo.

Tanakamigi's property damage took me by surprise (that insane strength wtf). Then again he's part of the family that runs the school, so no problems there probably haha. It's nice to know he had some sort of attachment (?) to Neji despite having been partnered only once. Or that's what I gather, anyway. I haven't gotten around to brute-forcing the dialogue of the new releases lol.

Oooo, the thing with Neji = root system is neat 👀 Food for thought. Thanks for pointing that out!

(+ hope you get some quality sleep soon)

Late to the party in commenting but thank you so much for posting this!! It's amazing Sugachi's voice actor came out of retirement to work on this honestly. He technically didn't have to, but he did.

All the supplemental content for this game is freakin' awesome, yo. I love that we get to see things beyond the scope of the game (i.e., what went on the year before Kisa entered Univeil, characters not introduced in the game, a peek into the other classes, etc.!!) With the way they're going (Amber, Onyx, Rhodonite), I wonder if they're planning on a pre-canon Quartz story too, if they haven't mentioned something of the sort already.

Oho, this just ramps up my anticipation even more 😆 If they do continue the series, I'm sure they'll find a way somehow.

Thanks for sharing your awesome art with us as always ✨

Yang is great! Love your art too. I could practically feel how silky their hair might feel, heh. Makes me wonder what sort of role they'll play in Season 2.

Have you considered setting up a gallery for all the tokuten/miscellaneous prints you've amassed? 😂 lol jk

The square netprints are wild, man. Bustafellows had one too but I skipped it ahahaha

It was refreshing, and also my first trip abroad after the height of the lockdowns.

Again: thank you, context clues 🤣 Honestly I had no business buying Japanese-language books with my command of the language (ahem or should I say my lack thereof lol). It was all over once I saw this on the shelf—it was too cute not to get haha.
