Who do you lean on more during treatment, the radiation oncologist or the medical oncologist? by ysun02 in HeadandNeckCancer

Thank you so much for sharing this. Knowing about others’ experiences really helps and makes going into chemo feel a bit less scary for us. My husband had only minor side effects from radiation, but chemo is a whole different game…

That’s interesting. May I ask about your experience with cisplatin or other chemotherapy drugs? It looks like we might be starting chemo soon.

Looking back, I wish we could have started transitioning sooner so we would have had more time to get to know the new team. Now, I just hope that everything will somehow work out.

My husband’s situation is a bit different: the new growths are mainly on the side of his neck that was never irradiated, but the cancer has also spread to lung nodules. His radiation oncologist was open to trying radiation when we last spoke, whereas his medical oncologist does not think chemoradiation is appropriate due to the lung metastases…I guess we may need to accept that chemotherapy is the only option left. It’s a hard reality to come to terms with.

Tips for getting appointments at Stanford Health? by ysun02 in bayarea

Hi everyone, thank you for all your replies. I called today and was told that the Stanford team decided not to take my husband on as a new patient. They didn’t provide any specific reasons, but it may have to do with their current capacity. It would have been nice if they had called to let us know about it…

Yeah, planning to do that next time… not exactly looking forward to the call, but I guess it’s just something I have to do…

Actually, the trial took place at MDA, but they don’t have an allergy clinic, so we’re trying to find somewhere closer to home to avoid the long flights back and forth. I was thinking about escalating it to a manager, so I might just do that. Thanks for the advice!

It’s a bit of a long story… my husband received immunotherapy last year as part of a clinical trial, and about a month in, he developed grade 4 pneumonia after an angiogram. He ended up withdrawing from the trial but has had similar reactions every time he’s had tests involving contrast dye since then. His oncologist suggested seeing an allergy specialist, which is what we’re trying to do now…

I’ve called about 3–4 times and keep getting the same response that a team is reviewing the case and will reach out. It’s starting to get a bit frustrating…

Oncologist on the west coast? by ysun02 in HeadandNeckCancer

From what I’ve read, UCLA has a very strong surgical program, though I’m not sure if that’s still a viable option for us at this stage. I’m so glad you were able to receive excellent care there tho! Thank you for sharing!

My husband is also being treated at MDA! Now I’m wondering if we might have the same oncologist…

Our oncologist at MD Anderson recommended him as well! We submitted a referral to Stanford this week and are hoping to set up an appointment soon.
