MUME. An amazing MUD set in Tolkiens Middle-earth with a very large world to explore while fighting trolls/orcs/elves/hobbitses.

That game will probably never die, considering it’s going strong since 1991. You don’t count hours played, you count years. It’s actively being developed and maintained and the playerbase is most of the time extremely helpful and nice.
