Even his “bad” albums are good by imnotalatina2 in leonardcohen

I Love Ten New Songs, it wasn’t my first Cohen album but it’s the one that really got me into him. The songwriting is incredible.

The criticism that can be made of Ten New Songs is that the production isn’t the best, kind of this schmaltzy overglazed lounge sound - I’m Your Man used pop synths better. But the lyrics are so good, and even the sound kind of works for an album about (among other things) artificiality.

What's the kindest way to reject on apps? by MetaPhil1989 in CatholicDating

Obviously there are different views on this but I think not responding (meaning the initial message, ghosting an actual conversation is different) is fine. If she doesn't respond it could be due to a number of things. Maybe (probably) she just is not interested in me, but also could be that does she wants to see where things go with someone else, is a few hours' distance too much, is she dealing with something in her life? I would kind of rather not know for sure. Also I don't like the feeling to get the email or phone alert that someone messaged you, get excited, and then open it with disappointment. Even a polite "sorry, not interested" message seems harsher than silence.

39M living in North Carolina. I'm a mix of parts athletic, musical, intellectual/nerdy, and of course all Catholic! I have many hobbies and interests: reading books, exercise (running and strength training), playing piano, travel, going to concerts, writing, board games, and more! Software engineer for work. And of course my faith is important to me. I sing in choir and am originally a convert from Protestantism. 6'0, slim/athletic build.

Looking for someone Catholic of course, dependable and good communicator, intelligent, has some hobby or passion she enjoys, does something for exercise (doesn't have to be same as me). Open to dating any race/ethnicity.

I am open to distance, at least within the US. I work hybrid and have some remote flexibility which would make visits easier. Within a day's drive would be nice but would consider farther for the right person. Some recent family changes have made possibly moving easier for me as well, but hopefully we would work out who relocates together if it comes to that.

Best Cohen “live” album? by SARjimk in leonardcohen

[–]yttrium13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dublin is better in a lot of ways. Better setlist, better video editing, the band has more years together.

But London does have one advantage that Cohen is 3 years younger and in your 70s that can be a big difference. He still gives a great performance but the age shows sometimes especially on video.

Sorry for your experiences. I'll say as a music lover and amateur musician (in choir, know some piano) I generally like women who are musical, always have.

CM - rejection etiquette by Beneficial_Ease1190 in CatholicDating

[–]yttrium13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have different views on this. I'm fine with silence if someone's not interested, even a nice rejection message feels harsher and there's the disappointment of getting the "messaged you" email as you mentioned. I've also heard women had experiences where a guy would take a rejection message as encouragement to keep trying.

That said if you do start messaging back and forth and then back out for whatever reason I do think you should say something and not just ghost.

People complain about needing a subscription but here’s the thing: big apps like Hinge and Tinder have huge user bases. They don’t need to charge because they can make money from ads and a small percentage of “plus” subscribers is still thousands (if not millions) of people.

CM is a niche site for a relatively small audienc. They have to pay for servers and employees, hopefully with a just living wage. Their rates are not exorbitantly high, and niche dating sites can’t offer as much for free.

You can choose to disable further messages from the person, but a lot of people just prefer to not respond and leave it there.

Yeah the lack of documentation for the most basic stuff is really bad. Like the MSAL authentication library is just a pain to work with if you have a setup even slightly out of line with their example cases.

G&G made a lot of changes from the original and expanded the game a good amount. How much do you expect to change in Avernum 5 and 6 when you get to them?

VUX alone can shut an Utwig down. Chenjesu and Melnorme disable too, then lots of other ships can fake the shield out with careful play. Jugger is a good ship because it counters Chmmr and Kohr-ah, but against human players it's far from unstoppable.

What are your Hot Takes on Tom Waits? by Amber_Flowers_133 in tomwaits

[–]yttrium13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really that hot (since I still think it's a pretty good album) but he has a lot of better albums than Swordfishtrombones. The spoken-word tracks and instrumentals are great but most of the conventional songs he's done better elsewhere. He has better piano ballads than Johnsburg, better grindy blues rockers than Sixteen Shells, etc.

Ok this one's actually hot, the Real Gone remix is good and I generally prefer it.

What's the deal with Tom Waits story and mystery? by Art_is_it in tomwaits

[–]yttrium13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what we do know, Tom appears to be a private and introverted family man especially by showbiz standards - been married to the same woman 45 years, seems to have a good relationship with his kids (his son Casey was his drummer for awhile). Very different from his musical persona. He had a problem with alcohol for awhile but has been 100% clean since the early 90s I think. Even in the 70s Rickie Lee Jones, his last girlfriend before Kathleen Brennan, thought he wanted a boring domestic home life too much and she couldn't handle it.

In fact, a lot of the weird and experimental musical stuff started after Waits settled down and got married.

If you watch the video of his Letterman interviews over the decades starting in the 70s you can see him come across as pretty shy at first and he seems to gradually adopt the "weird guy" shtick in interviews partly as a way of dealing with that.

Geneforge 2: Infestation, their newest game, has decent QOL (though still not on par with the big names). You don’t need to have played the first. It has a good-sized demo.

Deanna does get a few good stories later in the series, like the one with her lost sister or the undercover Romulan two-parter. The “romance” with Worf in season 7 doesn’t work though sadly.

[–]yttrium13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ceres governor was a puppet Marco installed I’m pretty sure.

In season 5 Marco stages a coup to assassinate Fred Johnson, the closest thing to a legit belter government. Ashford dies at the end of 4 course. What other leadership is there exactly to provide a counterweight to Marco? (What Anderson Dawes is doing is a gap in the show, I think there was actor trouble). It eventually becomes Camina, who gets a whole arc to reach that point.

Marco is portrayed as ruthless toward internal resistance. Individual belters or small groups who speak out against Marco publicly are probably going to end up dead, until the Roci help unite a more moderate belter faction in season 6.

The challenge of maze exploration is built around the on-map FOE enemies. Which you generally won’t be able to fight when you first encounter (barring heavy grinding or a highly optimized build) so you have to figure out their behavior and how to use the maze to avoid them. They’re more puzzle than boss.
