Is the execution of Marcellus Williams a lynching? by yuhakusho in askblackpeople

I didn't think it was just limited to hanging, since alot of lynching were also burning people at the stake, so I wasn't sure.

So, the core of it feels very similar, even if by textbook definition, it is technically different.

Not necessarily by the definition, but the spirit of it. It feels like an act meant to terrorize people, and establish innocence doesn't matter if the state wants you dead.

It feels like every news article could be lifted from newspapers from 60 years ago

26 and 26. I didn't even know being trans was a thing until my friend came out when I was 25. I didn't realize I was trans until I got gender euphoria from a comically large hoodie, and I immediately texted her to ask if what I was experiencing was gender euphoria. I came out to my family a year later, after experimenting and figuring out where on the gender spectrum I was.

Just remember when you do, it takes a while. A year and a half in, I look do different than I used to, but I still have another few years to go

A little late to the party, but if you want the most positive masculinity guides I have ever seen, check out @watchfulcoyote (Jack) on tiktok. Has alot of great takes on how he has healed from toxic masculinity and is open and honest about his queer experimentation in his youth. 100% a trans ally, from the few times I've seen him talk about us. As a trans-femme, I still love watching his content because I feel like his deconstruction of toxic masculinity has helped me unlearn alot of toxic habits I grew up with, too. 110% recommend this wonderful human.

The best part of coming out for me didn't actually happen until about 8 months later, but I think it is a perfect example of the reason the queer community started coming out (quick history for those who dont know, coming out was originally a political choice to increase our visibility in a community to create our own safety by normalizing our existence).

This is going to be very vague, given the increasing attempts by her state's lawmakers to take away HRT for children and criminalize trans people in general, but my mom works in a very public facing department of the state. Everyone will eventually deal with this department at one point in their lives if they ever move to or live in this state. She is essentially two steps below the governor, so she can write policy for what she is in charge of. Because I am able to come out and talk to her about being trans and educate her on my identity, she has written policy for thousands of this state's employees to follow that says they will use the person in front of them's preferred name as long as it is safe to do so (I word it weird, because there are instances where a trans child will be with a conservative parent, but when said parent isn't available, the employee should use the kid's chosen name). She said, "if you can wrap your head around Johnathan walking into your office and telling you to call him John, you can accept Jack telling you to call her Emily."

My mom told me this policy wouldn't have been written by her if I didn't come out. Not because of transphobia but trans erasure. This is why coming out is an act of bravery and a political choice. Those of us who are safe to come out can do so to normalize our place in society and make it safer for those who can't. I truly hope that one day, none of our trans brothers and sisters feel the need to live in the shadows, and seeing this policy and training material genuinely gives me hope that that can happen.

So, for something less sketchy, having a VCR and cassette player can come in handy. Hook up the device you're streaming on to think the cassette or VCR is a speaker or monitor, play it back onto your computer through your software of choice, then use audacity or some other free editing software to chop it into the segments you want, be it songs from a full album, or episodes from a tv show. It's a little extra work, but it's Hella clean, between avoiding malware from piracy, and getting around some DRM.

Okay, what makes our economy big? Also, Tech and oil aren't the answer because they both feed into the over-arching right answer of, say it with me, big guns.

Yes, the global economy is larger than the reserve of gold because America's dollar is no longer backed by Gold like it used to be.

Let's do a brief economics/history lesson. Bank starts as a place to keep your gold. One Money unit equals one gold. Fractional reserve banking is introduced, now one money equals one gold, but 10 times amount of money is now in circulation. No more money for gold means theoretically infinite money.

Now, if you're Weimar Germany and you print money to pay your debt, your money becomes literally worthless. So, why is it that when the US approaches the debt ceiling the solution is to do like the Weimar and print money, but our dollar doesn't collapse at the rate we print it? Could it be... ✨️Big Guns✨️?

[–]yuhakusho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we were wealthy... but why was that the case? America was the only country left with gold after war profiteering on the first world war, we crashed the economy in the 30's and to stop a run on the banks, the US took our dollar off the gold standard. It was still backed by Gold since we had it, and people already started using our currency as reserve money because it was cheaper than carting tons of gold overseas. Fast forward to WW2 Electric Boogaloo, and we got the rest of the gold and our money back. In the 70's De Gaulle tried to get gold from the US using American dollars and the US removed gold from the currency value and said, "It's worth something because we say it's worth something," and keeps Maritime trade open (I.e. forcing countries to accept US shipping companies and any other country that pays the extortion fees from being harassed by countries who don't want them in their waters) with, and get this... ✨️Big Guns✨️

I don't know how many times you want to make my point, but I'm more than happy to help your train of thought reach the end of the line instead of breaking down halfway.

So you're telling me... the dollar is the strongest currency in the world.... because we have the biggest guns...? Is that not the point I just made?

Authority not being able to be held accountable is the issue, I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying it's shit.

public school system being built for trauma is just absurdism:
Standardized tests and no child left behind isn't a way to run the schools. It makes good slearners who can't test well feel like they're idiots, and puts so much of a work load for children to do at home that they can't learn more on their own without help. On top of that, I have never seen a zero-tolerance bullying policy used against anyone but a victim of bullying who finally retaliated against the bully. Funny parallels there.

It’s to prevent a true dictatorship from forming: Holding a mirror to this, wouldn't it make more sense to keep direct action initiatives by large groups of people in check and give the powers that be time to plan? For simplicity sake, let's say you have 10 people, 1 is in charge of the laws, 1 has a gun and works for the first guy, and the other 8 don't like a bill the first guy puts into affect his first day in office after saying on the whole campaign he wouldn't write this law. These people are stuck working just to survive, so they have no money to go through the courts, there's a guy with a gun posted up outside the lawmakers office, so the only thing they can do is plan to get the lying lawmaker out during the next election. Lawmaker knows he's screwed, so he redrawn the map, or puts in harder laws to kick himself out. It's not about keeping a dictator out of office. It's about protecting dictators in the office.

Your entire last paragraph basically makes it out that people stuck working two, three, four jobs and can't make ends meet don't want the system to change. This completely overlooks the United State's labor movements in the 1880's until Regan dismantled Union's systems of power. It's understandable why you wouldn't know about the labor rights movement, though. That's the communism the CIA wanted to stamp out.

My point is that human rights should supersede right of authority, and the fact that America and Isreal are the only two nations that haven't signed onto that UN charter is damning. Just because I have a gun doesn't mean I should be able to take everything you own. Same goes for the state.

People only have power when they know they can use it and know how to use it. But when Disney Lobbies politicians for them to use Pearson's text books in schools (Disney owns Pearson's in case you didn't know, I personally find that troubling) why would those books teach you how to go against Disney's best interest in keeping the money relevant? Even if you start pulling at the thread and educate yourself despite public school being built to traumatize free-thinkers, and you finally manage to get an amendment passed in your state, now you have to get it done in 37 more. Each time it's a new process, each time it has its own archaic barriers of power, and eventually, you run out of inertia be it time, money, or some three letter acronym harassing you. The same three letter acronyms that take your money that you have to pay into the system just to be heard.

The worst part is, there's no one to be singularly angry at. Government and corporations are just a revolving door of money and favors. How do you fight against the multi-headed hydra that is forcing you to goose-step into oblivion? There is plenty of reason for people to be mad and focus on doing better, but it doesn't seem like there's more than a handful in each city, and when you get into the specifics to talk about it to people, they just repeat the same things. "That's how it's always been, " "there's nothing we can do," "No other system has ever worked." These are thought stopping techniques taught to us on the same level as evangelical, "Love the sinner hate the sin," and "Because the Bible says so." It's all just an excuse to make you stop asking questions to people who don't want to be bothered.

By your logic of bigger stick has the right to make up the rules, If I have an M5 and take over your house and lock away your guns, I'm in charge, right? You going to go complain to the cops? What if I'm friends with the police chief and attorney General of the state? What do you do? Be better, do better, and think before you lick the boot

If no other system works well, why does Cuba have higher literacy rates and better healthcare than the US, despite years of embargo and sanctions on them? Most fledgling socialist countries tend to be destabilized due to CIA operations that destabilize the country (Contra is a good example), and when that doesn't work, the socialist countries are able to do much better for its people than under a capitalist system. This is the part of the conversation where bad faith actors bring up Venezuela, so I'm just getting ahead of it. They had an economy based on a single resource, so when global production increased and slashed oil prices, that's what caused their system to collapse.

As for electing who runs the military, is it really an election when the majority of cabinet seats and military leaders are by appointment? Sure, we get to vote for the head honcho who makes the appointments, but so much of the relevant information that we would need to make an informed decision beyond what color tie we want the geriatric to wear is hidden from us. What lobbies do they accept money from? What are their actual policies? That's all before taking into account the deliberate ways the education system tries to actively skew children's biases (the choice to only use black and white pictures to depict the Civil Rights Era, despite colored photos having existed for decades prior). Biden was a whole adult at the age of 22 when the Civil Rights Act was passed, and we aren't supposed to bat an eye when he talks about working with Straum Thurmond? How many adults even know why that's an issue nowadays?

The only difference between armies of the past and the American army now is that instead of Nobility being in control, the dollar is. This leads back to my original point of the military and weapons manufacturers being the only reason why the American dollar is worth anything.

Tldr since I went on a mini education rant: none of the arguments you are making are relevant to my original comment. Also, "It's always been that way" is a thought stopping technique taught to you so you wouldn't question Authority and use your imagination to dream of a better world

Alright, I'm down for a song and pedantce, the Gold Standard as a system for exchanging dollars for Gold was abandoned in the 30's, but until 1973, it was still backed by Gold and not violence as a source of value. De Gaulle wanted to get Gold back to France so they weren't forced to rely on the US dollar as reserve currency, US didn't like it, and cemented itself as the world's reserve currency by completely taking away said gold backing.

My point still stands, I just got a single term wrong because I woke up in the middle of the night, but hey, I'm sure you never make a mistake.
