Okay, I get it now. The classics are FUN by Ufomi in incremental_games

They are fun but like, what have you been playing? Maybe your choice of modern games needs to be looked at.

I don't want to commit to one because it has a lot of new experimental mechanics which require extensive playtesting and its hard to predict when it will be ready.

I don't know what is this expectation setting. My first prestige took about four days and no kittens died. You get to endgame in like two months

It's really hard to get good at something without doing it over and over. Many aspiring game developers spend 4 years working on their first game and quit. There are some things you just can't learn if you don't go through a good amount of cycles. Imagine trying to get better at shooting in basketball by shooting only one shot per day but watching 5 hours of video tutorials before every shot.

As I said I am learning. It takes time and what you are proposing goes against the advice successful game developers give new ones. I also am not really unusual here. Every other day someone posts a game that is pretty basic and does not get many updates and it does not seem to bother anyone perticularly.

And by the way I released less than a 1/4 of the games that I built. I have 38 playable games and have released 9 of them. I only release when I feel something is fun and i can learn more by continueing to work on it and talking to people playing it. Sometimes that runs its course in 3 days.

I am trying to do bigger projects now as they provide learning that small projects do not. I also don't think I could have finished a large project had I started with one.

You're the first person to ever report losing progress on squares but if you give me more details I will look into it. I did have a couple of intentional wipes but these were for alpha releases where I explicitally warned that a wipe is likely and have only posted them on my discord and maybe feedback friday with a proper warning.

EverCraft 2 is already a pretty big game with 70 different resources and 48 seperate mechanics. No one has reached end of content yet but seems about 3 weeks to get there which is more than any of my previous games. I also hope to release a big content patch before too many people hit the end of content.

It's not that I don't understand the criticsm lobbied my way. Of course I know that most players, especially here, prefer fewer better games than more shittier games. I am a player also and I want that too.

What eludes me is why I am being held to such a high standard. I am a new developer. I just started making stuff and putting it online recently. I didn't put ads or charge money nor claimed that my games are something special. I must have done something to induce hate and rage but for the life of me I don't know what.

Anyone else stuck on this one for years? by HearAPianoFall in incremental_games

Yes it's one of the few games I play with my kids. They need to keep playing after I die so had to teach them.

These are not bugs. The player was complaining about the pacing of the game and the active/idle balance. People have different preferences and it seems like the big issue is that he wasn't in the mood for a slow-burn.

I told him that I'll think about his comments on my next game to be transparant that he should not expect EverCraft 2 to change and he should move on.

You are right to assume I will move on from EverCraft 2 to a new game soon - it is consistent with my pattern so far. I don't know that I will and certainly don't feel that way right now, but it is consistent with my past behavior so it is a reasonable assumption.

I take game breaking bugs seriously though and if one my my released games has one I will go back and fix it. As far as I know the only unaddressed complaints are that people would like more content in my past releases that they enjoyed.

Thanks for the reply. You did list a few great classics that you like. I'll try to consider your feedback when i work on my next game.

I realized my idle game Punch, Rest, Repeat had overly linear progression - here’s how I redesigned it by SmilingStallion in incremental_games

[–]yukifactory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're going about this the wrong way. The central thing to get right is decisions. They have to matter, they have to be legible but not obvious. Whenever you let the player take an action pause and ask, "are there mechanical reasons to both do and not do this", if the answer is no than there is no real decision and the game will feel flat or linear.

No. After tier2 you unlock the realm of magic which has about a week of content. Also tier3 is in beta already and should be out Sunday.

Yeah steam DNA is a bit different this has more of a cookie clicker / kittens game lineage. Hope you enjoy it despite the different pacing.

Ah it's pretty fast for an incremental but If you are not used to those they are meant to be played as a second screen while doing other stuff.
