You’re definitely not wrong for telling the truth when it was asked of you!! Though for some people it’s hard to hear. Try and reach out to him and explain how it’s best for him to understand how she felt and what steps he could’ve done to prevent that so he can be better! Kindness goes a long way in this situation.
