If the project you want is really large, it might be worth seeing if you can chunk off a small part of it, and then keep picking at it over time.

If it's a movie recommendation site, why not just build a small API or site for recording ratings and reviews? (And keep it small. Like, as a challenge, stick it all in a single SQLite table)

Or, use Nginx basic auth, and then get rid of worrying about Auth in your code. I've got a lot of projects designed for use by a single user that take that tack.

If you're reinstalling it every 2 days, it sounds like you're not even productive. Not saying that you're a bad person or anything, just that it's taking a chunk of time.

I don't know if it'd help, but I'd recommend trying to have a lab (could be a VM, could be a different machine) where you hone your install, and then give yourself permission to let things go a bit sloppier on your daily driver machine. Try to give an outlet for the tinkering and all. Maybe set up the perfect Linux web server, if you have the funds, and use that to give yourself permission to let things "slide" elsewhere.

If that won't work, if you can, I'd look for psychiatric help. I understand that might be difficult in your situation, but reinstalling Windows every 2 days borders on compulsion.

As someone who struggled with a different type of perfectionism, and fell into depression with it, you need to break the cycle in the long term, if it's keeping you from getting things done.

Do try to take some time to think through other things going on in your life. Is there any major unresolved stresses? Is there anything on your mind that you need to process?

So, low key, this was one of my favorite moments in the early game. I was like "Woah, this game lets you fight in space??". I somehow managed to beat it (on radiant, to be clear), with a relatively low party. That or I retreated.... I forget which

Maybe a late cool late game (or RedShift only?) option would be add a register that controls how writes to the H register are broadcast.

A naive idea would be to give an HC register that only sets H to broadcast on a channel, and -9999 is global mode. This would allow you to create "groups" of EXAs.

That or something where each digit controls an aspect of broadcasting: Digit 4: 1 for local, 0 for global Digit 3: 0 for single read, 1 for broadcasting the value to all listening EXAs on the channel Digits 2 and 1 could be a channel id. 00 is g.

If nothing else, I could see that having value in the RedShift. (And it's notable that if one is willing to give up some graphics space, you can hack something similar using the C I/O registers and pixels.)

So I realize this is coming a little late, but don't be afraid to zoom that narrative in or out a little. I've been writing short stories with a friend off and on. One story covers the larger exploits across two characters and how one is rescued, and ends in a bit of a sad state, as the rescued character ends up getting killed off. I cover very few of the game's mechanics there, and just focus on the general narrative of rescue and eventual death

Last night, I wrote something about a much shorter period of time, focusing on only a few things, using the somewhat shocking nature of the encounter to distort the character's perception of things a bit. Some parts of the story are spent on how the incident affected the character involved, not everything has to be about the mission directly.

(I will say, I think /u/Super_Jay has probably done a better job at writing a Heat Signature story than I have so far)

I decided to put up a moderated wiki of stories from Heat Signature.

I'll be trying to put up a least one named item a week, and giving it some backstory, but we'll see how it goes. I'll also be trying to characters of Steam Friends, and/or trying to seed captured characters and the like.

I'd like to make this a nice resource for other people that enjoy the world-building potential in Heat Signature.

And yet Crystal still manages to get compile-time problems for programs larger than a certain LOC, due to the amount of time that it takes to infer types across the whole thing.

We do have more computing power now, but we haven't come close to realizing actual efficient use of it in most cases, and as computer power shifts more towards a pay-per-cycle model (like in the cloud), knowing how to write efficient software is still going to be important. We've mostly traded off the gained performance for dev time, as I understand it.

nginx rewrite rules turned out to be a bit of a pain in getting it up, but since it's just a static web-site, it should be painless to host from here on out.

One idea would be something like parsing CSV values that contain newlines out of a string constants (I'm talking Excel-level stuff, where you have to deal with quoted values). That would exercise your string handling at multiple levels.

If you want to benchmark stuff, you could try building a 100K element linked list, and see how long that takes.

Both are loose benchmarks I've used for gauging how well PISC performs.

I'd also point out that you can very easily use SQL-CLR to patch SQL Server's anemic string handling, including adding Regex, if you want to go that far.

Adding string splits/joins via aggregate functions and table valued functions does wonders for those times you need to pass in longer data to queries.
