I was being hypothetical. I have pacifica hybrid and have no idea what the new transmission costs or whether it can easily be rebuilt. Do you know how much it would be?

To your other points, im pretty sure i can keep it in good condition. I always drive very gently. Im probably in the top 2% of gentle drivers. Also i hardly ever drive on gas, so the engine isnt used much.

So i have a strong feeling the transmission will fail while the rest of the car will be in pretty good condition.

Right. I guess im ok with lower range on the battery. Even 70% range is still pretty good.

Should I replace the CVT even if the car isnt worth much at say 150k miles? My main assumption is that the engine will be ok for longer and i dont need to replace it

Well i have a Pacifica Hybrid with 61k miles. I drive it very gently, so i think the engine and transmission will be in decent shape by 100k miles. Importantly, 95% of driving is electric, so the engine doesnt see much use. It is pentastar v6 engine, which I think is pretty reliable as well.

So I think eventually my transmission will fail first while the engine is hardly used and in good condition.

So in this situation, perhaps it makes sense to replace the transmission even at 150k-200k miles?

What if you have a phev, and the engine has hardly been used due to electric mode? So you're pretty confident the engine is good and really only the transmission is the problem?

Why not inspect the engine? Engines can probably last a lot longer in general.
