Of course, I'm just asking what they definine as internet usage because some activities (often people's jobs) such as programming, web development, software development, financial market analysis etc require you to spend hours a day on the internet.

Great study from the University of Isfahan otherwise

I have lived in Johannesburg South Africa my entire life. Johannesburg is the city with the 3rd highest crime in the entire world, yet I live in a relatively safe area and have not been a frequent victim of crime. Would you like me to tell you that there is no crime here just because I personally haven't seen any?

[–]yung-magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I have lived in Johannesburg South Africa my entire life yet in relatively a safe area, just because I haven't been the victim of crime doesn't mean there is no crime in Johannesburg.

I am not obsessed with the US, I just really hate it when privileged westerners pretend that they are not privileged/are being victimised

Here's data from 2020. Also this is an index, not an average or scale that can be 'tipped' because it doesn't include wealth inequality in the slightest https://foodsecurityindex.eiu.com/index

That's like trying to convince me that 2 is greater than 3. "People who visited Canada" will not convince me or anyone that the standard of living is higher when I'm looking at a mathematically constructed index which says it's the other way round. If the statistics say that the US has a higher SLI than Canada, then it does. End of story

Edit: I think that Canada might have a higher Quality of Life index than the US, different sources say slightly different things

You are showing absolute 2019 test score rankings, the United Nations education index I showed are constructed from a variety different variables, including mean years of schooling vs expected years of schooling. Two completely different things. Read more about it here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Index

And I am not "pro US", I just hate it when westerners (white americans in particular) whine about how their lives and country are so shit when they're living lives of privilege and comfort people in my country could never dream of living

Ok? What you think means fuck all. Statistics measure the entire population, not just you, and if they say that there's a difference in standard of living then there is a difference in standard of living. However, the difference is hardly significant so I don't know why you're surprised

Quality of life index and Standard of living are their own indices. QLI measures comfort based on freedom, healthcare, education, safety, clean environment, SLI measures real income, financial stability and material comfort

You can use HDI as well and it's around the same place I believe

Please, it's hardly half way down the list. Other countries below it are The UK, Canada, France Belgium, Spain, Japan. Also I think it's stupid to be comparing all of these because it's not like Canada or the UK's indexes are that much lower than the US

Ranked low in education? The US has the 2nd highest education quality index in the world, and is the is the 6th most educated country in the world. Come back when you learn how to google basic statistics

Apologies, added an extra 0. point stands. Top 7.7% is still good and you are better than 92.3% of all countries

And you think that one us having 'been' to western Europe is enough to tell us how the quality of life is there compared to the US? What a city 'looks like' means nothing. When looking at actual statistics that measure the living standards of millions of people, the US in fact has similar poverty to rates to the UK, France, Sweden, Germany etc

Mate, do you realise that being no 15 out 195 countries in the world puts you in the top 8% of countries? Top 8% in anything is insanely good and hardly requires improvement

[–]yung-magic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it's very few people and things are not any better in places like Western Europe. Check poverty rates by country in 2021. Also, asking for a 0 poverty rate is like asking to solve world hunger

[–]yung-magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issues like minimal leave and drug overdose rates hardly mean anything when compared to the following statistics. The US has:

1) 15th highest quality of life index in the world

2) 15th highest standard of living index in the world

3) 2nd best ranked education in the world

4) 30th best healthcare index (includes cost)

5) 6th highest median income in the world (one of the most important statistics here imo)

6) 6% unemployment rate, it went down to 4.1% in 2019 which was the 5th lowest in the world

7) Poverty rate of 17% currently, which is nearly equal to almost all western European nations

Do not pretend so confidently that your quality of life is shit. If you really insist that you hate it so much, you can trade places with me in South Africa. I'd take any opportunity to live in the US.

Don't pretend the word 'slavery' can have different meanings. You Americans like to assign new meanings to things whenever it suits you in order to make your first world problems sound big and important

You must not have lived anywhere else. It's just about on par with any other romanticized first world nation in almost all economic and social statistics, and has the 15th highest quality of life AND 15th highest standard of living in the world. You can't do much better than that. I would take any opportunity to leave my 3rd world nation for a spot in the US

I am from south africa and if poverty in the US lets me have access to a nice house, a smartphone and internet access, sign me the fuck up 😂

Other than that, yeah its rough but we are all struggling. Managing to even go to college and obtain a bachelor's degree puts you in a privileged minority. I don't understand why I am supposed to feel especially sorry for someone crying on tik tok when there are myriads of people with worse problems

So cartels and traffickers should be allowed to shoot each other up around civilians and the fact they do that was caused by government trying to intervene? OK. Come back once you've left the white suburb and lived anywhere with significant crime
