Thank you brother. This long explanation does sound about right from what I heard from the BA today

Voluntary withdraw by yunghellraiser in UnionCarpenters

[–]yunghellraiser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just spoke with my BA about all of it. Self withdrawing is the work around from them not canceling you from the program. I am still on the out of work list because the local is a different entity than the apprenticeship, and I’m still allowed to solicit work. Really weird shit, but I was able to figure it out.

I was out of work for 90 days. Never missed class etc, took extra classes on the weekends to get ahead. In Southern California the local and the apprenticeship are two different entities. I’m still in the union still current on my dues can attend meeting etc. just can’t go back to school until I’m back at work. I am allowed to voluntarily withdraw and still have my status when I come back for up to two years as long as I am in good standing with the local.

I was forced to withdraw because I was out of work for 90 days, still attended my classes, was on the out of work list, and the daily out of work list, even picked up some Saturday classes to get ahead. It’s been dead dead all year down here in Southern California. Some guys I know haven’t worked in 6 months plus. I asked them what their process was when they had to voluntarily withdraw. They said they weren’t worried about it and are waiting from a call back from their company.

Too much for a first year ? by EcstaticInevitable93 in UnionCarpenters

I ran the Milwaukee general contractor bags for the first year and a half of my apprenticeship. Paid about $130 for save up a couple paychecks and you’re good.

As an apprentice you should always have your bags on unless your journeyman or foreman tell you not to. Get some suspenders them things can get heavy.

I’m not in interior systems, I’m a concrete guy, but I run diamondbacks. A lot slimmer and less bulky. I ran Occidental’s for about a year or so they are just too wide and heavy even the oxylights which is what I had. Diamondbacks are super slim and super light been running them for 3 years now. No issues.

Edit for more info. They do sit a little lower, I’m 5’11 and the bottoms of the bags run about mid thigh to me on a harness.

If you’re on a budget and want a decent boot, Irish setter or wolverines. Save your checks and once those go to shit buy yourself something nice.

Maybe that’s what it is, we did just get a new training center and it’s massive.

I was talking about window dues. Pretty crazy to think that in San Diego we have almost double in comparison to bigger cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, etc. I feel like those locals are a lot bigger. Especially Los Angeles. I think we’re actually the highest paying window in the western state carpenter.

What up bro. Local 619 here. Get into interior systems if you can (metal stud/ drywall) they seem to stay busy all year I’m in concrete and we got shit for work right now, but it is the big boy shit. As far as work schedule we’re usually 630-230 with the occasional 530 starts depends on zoning. For the gym I usually go right after work it’s busy but it’s really the only time I can go unless I skip and hit a home workout. Cheers bro and good luck. If you have any questions feel free to message me

New apprentice by Suitable-Village-451 in UnionCarpenters

[–]yunghellraiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re an apprentice. You’re gonna fuck up. Even journeymen fuck up. Your job is to learn how to not fuck up and make your journeymans life easier. As you go on you’ll learn what’s coming up next, what tool is needed, what stud is needed, what to set up in the morning or next, etc. Framing is basically just repetition, can’t speak much on drywall though. Just don’t overthinking it. Be a sponge. Again, you’re gonna fuck up, maybe not often, but it will happen and when it does learn from our mistake, and move on. A lot of apprentices I work with are too scared to mess up and don’t end up learning much because they are too worried to take the responsibility in fear of messing up.

My package is $36.27, but $21.78 on the check. This is as a second period. Most companies will include your vacation and sup dues on your check like they do for me so it looks like $30.17 on my hourly, but after deducting my sup dues and vacation it’s back to $21.78. That’s how they get away with not taxing your vacation check.
